What are the responsibilities and job description for the Progressive Die Tool Technician / Toolmaker position at HOB Industries Inc.?
Progressive Die Tool Technician / Toolmaker
HOB Industries — Cheshire, CT
Full-Time
HOB Industries is looking for a hands-on Progressive Die Tool Technician / Toolmaker to join our manufacturing team.
This is not a traditional toolmaking position focused primarily on building new dies from the ground up. The role is centered around keeping high-speed progressive stamping dies running accurately, reliably, and efficiently.
Our current team performing this work includes both experienced toolmakers and mechanically inclined engineers. Because of that, we are open to candidates from several backgrounds. You may be a traditional toolmaker, machinist, die maintenance technician, CNC technician, mechanical engineering technician, or someone with strong mechanical aptitude and relevant manufacturing experience.
What matters most is your ability to understand how tooling works, diagnose problems, make accurate mechanical adjustments and repairs, and learn the details of progressive die operation.
What You'll Do
- Troubleshoot progressive stamping dies and identify the root cause of production or quality problems
- Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and adjustment of progressive dies
- Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble tooling
- Replace, fit, and adjust punches, dies, inserts, springs, pilots, guides, and other tooling components
- Diagnose issues involving part dimensions, burrs, feeding, strip progression, alignment, wear, and tool timing
- Make precise mechanical adjustments to bring tooling and finished parts back into specification
- Work directly with press operators, engineering, quality, and other toolroom personnel to resolve problems
- Use measuring equipment to inspect tooling and stamped components
- Assist with tool improvements aimed at increasing reliability, quality, tool life, and production efficiency
- Document repairs, recurring problems, and changes made to tooling
- Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement of high-volume, high-speed stamping processes
- Perform basic machining, grinding, fitting, polishing, and handwork as required
- Participate in the development and improvement of tooling standards and maintenance practices
What We're Looking For
We are more interested in mechanical ability, problem-solving skills, precision, and willingness to learn than in a specific job title or career path.
Relevant backgrounds could include:
- Progressive die toolmaker
- Die maintenance or die repair technician
- Tool & die technician
- Machinist or CNC machinist
- Toolroom technician
- Mechanical engineering technician
- Mechanical engineer with strong hands-on manufacturing experience
- Experienced press or setup technician with substantial tooling knowledge
Preferred Skills
Experience with some combination of the following is beneficial:
- Progressive stamping dies
- High-speed metal stamping
- Tool and die repair
- Precision machining
- Surface grinding
- CNC milling or turning
- Wire EDM
- Blueprint and technical drawing interpretation
- Precision measurement and inspection
- Mechanical troubleshooting
- Tool steels, heat treatment, and wear components
- Tight-tolerance manufacturing
You do not need experience with every item listed above to be considered.
The Person Who Will Do Well Here
This role is a good fit for someone who:
- Likes understanding why something isn't working, rather than simply replacing parts
- Is mechanically curious and comfortable working with precision equipment
- Can work through a problem methodically
- Notices small differences and understands that thousandths of an inch matter
- Takes pride in making equipment and tooling run correctly
- Is comfortable working both independently and with operators, engineers, and other trades
- Is willing to learn new equipment and manufacturing processes
- Understands that good tooling work combines craftsmanship with systematic troubleshooting
