Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- The Histology Technician prepares surgical specimen for microscopic examination by the Pathologist.
- Processes tissues which may include dehydration, embedding, cutting, staining, decalcification, and frozen section cryostat methods.
- This role assures specimen are prepared following all quality control (QC) policies and biohazard regulations.
- Performs procedures within established turn-around-times and maintains a clean, well-organized work area.
- Responds to out of range QC conditions.
- Documents and tracks specimens in the laboratory tracking system.
- Reports promptly all “near misses,” potential, and actual errors.
- Provides suggestions for error prevention and participates in continuous quality improvement process.
- Assists with ordering and storing supplies.
- Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct.
- Supports the laboratory mission.
- Participates in the continuous quality improvement process.
- Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures. This knowledge may include the use of specialized instrumentation, quality control requirements, and preventative maintenance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Baccalaureate Degree in medical technology or related science preferred.
- Knowledge of section specific test methodology and instrumentation is required. Previous experience as a Histology Tech preferred.
