About the Opportunity:
The Controller is responsible for leading the accounting team and manages all day-to-day accounting activities of HNY Ferry II. This hands-on Controller position reports to the VP Accounting and serves a broad and critical role as a business partner to the organization, helping to ensure that high-quality financial information is created and used to drive decisions and operations in this fast-moving Business Unit. This person will also be responsible for financial reporting, internal controls and supporting the management team with strategic finance activities and day-to-day business operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage all accounting functions including billing, AR, AP, and general accounting including the recording of payroll, benefits, inter-company transactions, assets, and liabilities.
- Perform month-end closing by managing and reviewing the work of the accounting staff and resolving open items to ensure timely and accurate completion. Manage the recording of expense accruals and review GL for proper classification of transactions. Prepare and record adjusting journal entries as needed.
- Manage day-to-day banking activities by reviewing account activity and approving electronic payments and check runs.
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies and procedures including a strong system of internal controls to insure protection of company assets.
- Lead and develop the accounting team through talent management, including hiring, motivating, coaching, training, and mentoring team members.
- Assist the Corporate Accounting team with general ledger maintenance and subsystem improvements.
- Prepare financial statements, analyses, documentation for financial audits, and other key management reports to support Ferry contract reporting and compliance matters.
- Support the Vice President Accounting with similar accounting activities across Ferry and Transportation Services companies.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- 8-10 years Controller experience managing day-to-day accounting and banking activities.
- Proactive self-starter who enjoys a fast-paced environment and an ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet firm deadlines.
- Proficiency working with an enterprise general ledger system and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. Great Plains accounting software experience preferred.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of GAAP.
- Excellent problem solving, organizational, and communication skills.
