What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Municipal Underwriter position at HJ Sims?
HJ Sims is seeking an Assistant Municipal Underwriter to join our team. The candidate will join the Municipal Underwriting team and report directly to the Head of Municipal Underwriting. The Assistant Underwriter position is responsible for coordinating all facets of the bond underwriting process, relying on knowledge and expertise of markets, concepts, and practices and procedures.
The Assistant Underwriter will work directly with our municipal institutional sales professionals, municipal traders, public finance bankers, investors, and issuers to manage the new issue pricing process across various regions and sectors, as instructed by the Head of Municipal Underwriting. The candidate selected for this position will quickly gain a working knowledge of HJ Sims’ trading and underwriting systems and practices. Additionally, this role requires diligent oversight of the new issue process with a demonstrated ability to multi-task, communicate clearly and operate decisively in a fast-paced environment.
Duties:
- Review internal transaction calendar with all new issue information, prepare pricing schedules, identify comparable deals and develop a pricing strategy for new issue engagements.
- Participate on conference calls, meetings and Public Finance interviews for new business opportunities, primarily high yield in nature
- Interact daily with HJ Sims’ bankers to discuss market conditions, pricing tactics, investor preferences and to strategize on new business development
- Account for and maintain syndicate balances along with orders and indications of interest for new issues.
- Utilize Bloomberg functions regarding deal distribution, pricing and messaging.
- Facilitate the process for effectively disseminating comprehensive information regarding new issue scales, pricing, balances, CUSIPS and trade execution.
- Coordinate with Compliance to ensure all deal information is accurately updated for daily distribution of reports to multiple departments
- Proactive and dynamic attitude along with excellent communication and presentation skills, as this role requires interaction and business development with a wide range of stakeholders including banking, sales, trading, issuers, investors and internal stakeholders.
- Demonstrates the ability and desire to build and develop skill set and add value to team
- Ability to demonstrate depth of knowledge in municipal credit and finance
- Strong understanding of municipal market dynamics
- Bachelor’s degree is required
- Minimum of 5 years on trading or underwriting desk
FINRA SIE, Series 7 or 52 and Series 63 or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
