What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Utility Locator position at Hixson Utility District?
The Water Utility Locator is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground water infrastructure to prevent damage during excavation activities. This role supports system integrity, public safety, and regulatory compliance by responding to locate requests in a timely and professional manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to utility locate requests through the Tennessee 811 system within required timeframes
- Locate and mark underground water lines, valves, meters, and related infrastructure using appropriate tools and technology
- Read and interpret maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data to identify utility locations
- Maintain accurate records of all locate requests, markings, and field conditions
- Communicate clearly with contractors, excavators, and the public regarding utility locations and safe digging practices
- Inspect and verify existing infrastructure in the field and report discrepancies or potential issues
- Assist with updates to mapping and GIS systems as needed
- Follow all safety protocols, including proper traffic control
- Coordinate with operations and maintenance staff on system improvements or emergency situations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Previous experience in utility locating, construction, or water distribution preferred
- Knowledge of underground utility locating methods and equipment preferred
- Ability to read maps, construction drawings, and GIS systems
- Valid Tennessee driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Good communication and customer service skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Frequent bending, kneeling, and standing
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions year-round
Work Environment
- Primarily field-based position
- Exposure to traffic, construction sites, and varying weather conditions
- Will require after-hours or emergency response work
