We are seeking a Director, Software Engineering to lead the Open Source Community who is passionate about growing and sustaining open source innovation and building robust engineering communities. This leader will be a part of an innovative technology organization focused on fostering a culture of engineering and operational excellence. Open source technology has changed how we think of collaboration, community building and continuous innovation across Capital One. As part of this role, you'll be driving Capital One's open source community building efforts across the enterprise to strengthen our culture of contribution and engagement with external partners and projects. With an open source-first approach to software development, you'll have the opportunity to drive innovation and touch on many established and emerging technologies across the enterprise, such as: GenAI, node.js, Java, GO, Python, Kubernetes, and AWS/Cloud Infrastructure to name a few.
This position is in the Engineering for Impact team and will be leading the way to our destination of being an open source-first technology leader.
You will:
- Lead initiatives across our developer community to champion innersourcing and open sourcing efforts
- Bring a passion to stay on top of open source tech trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, with the goal of developing internal & external technology communities
- Encourage open source innovation, implementation of cutting-edge technologies, inclusion, outside-of-the-box thinking, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity
- Develop the technical strategy, roadmap and vision for the leveraging open source technologies and driving innovation
- Work with product managers to understand desired application capabilities and testing scenarios - Continuously improve software engineering practices
- Work within and across enterprise-wide Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across a full-stack development tools and technologies
- Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of your solutions
- Lead efforts to deploy new and existing applications into AWS environments
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- At least 7 years experience in software engineering or software development
- At least 5 years experience in people management
- At least 1 year experience with open source software
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree
- 10 years of experience in software engineering or software development
- 5 years of experience in Agile practices
- 3 years of experience with open source software
- 3 years of experience developing strategy to solve technical challenges in open source communities

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $269,400 - $307,500 for Director, Software EngineeringCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
