What are the responsibilities and job description for the Additive AI - Backend SWE position at HireOTS?
Additive AI is building AI-powered systems that automate one of the most complex and high-stakes workflows in the world: tax and accounting document processing. Firms today spend enormous time and money manually extracting, validating, and reconciling data from dense tax documents — a process that is slow, error-prone, and expensive.
We’re tackling this problem head-on. Additive AI, now part of Thomson Reuters, combines startup velocity with the scale, trust, and distribution of a global leader. Our platform uses advanced machine learning and generative AI to extract, structure, and validate tax data with exceptional accuracy, enabling accounting firms to reduce manual work and focus on higher-value advisory services.
This is an opportunity to build foundational backend systems that deploy real machine learning into production, shape core architecture, and have outsized impact on how professionals work every day.
About the Role
We’re hiring a Member of Technical Staff – Backend with 5 years of experience who wants significant ownership and influence over core systems. This role is for an exceptional builder who thinks pragmatically, makes strong architectural decisions, and thrives with responsibility.
You’ll be instrumental in designing and building the backend services that power Additive’s machine learning capabilities — from training pipelines to production inference — and in enabling rapid iteration on product experiences used by real customers.
You’ll work closely with engineers, ML systems, and accountants to deliver reliable, scalable systems that sit at the intersection of AI, infrastructure, and tax-domain business logic.
What You’ll Do
-
Build core backend systems for deploying machine learning in both training and production environments
-
Drive technology and architectural decisions for Additive’s core services
-
Extract structured data from complex tax documents while improving output quality and scalability
-
Design and build integrations across ML inference, monitoring systems, LLM interactions, application layers, and tax-specific business logic
-
Develop database layers supporting business logic and applications, and integrate with external vendor APIs
-
Collaborate on CI/CD systems to accelerate development velocity
-
Work directly with accountants to deeply understand workflows and translate needs into robust systems
You Might Thrive in This Role If You:
-
Have 5 years of backend software engineering experience, primarily in Python
-
Have worked in well-established, high-bar engineering environments
-
Have a track record of making thoughtful, pragmatic architectural decisions
-
Are comfortable owning critical systems end-to-end
-
Enjoy working closely with domain experts and customers
-
Want responsibility, impact, and the ability to shape foundational infrastructure
