About the Opportunity
A growing commercial real estate firm is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting and financial operations. The firm manages a diverse portfolio of commercial properties and need a hands-on leader role to help shape accounting processes, lead a talented team, and make a measurable impact across the business.
The Role
The Controller will work closely with senior leadership, property management, leasing, and operations teams to ensure accurate reporting and drive process improvements.
As Controller, you will oversee and optimize all accounting operations, ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, and maintain compliance with internal policies and external standards. This role balances leadership with hands-on involvement in day-to-day accounting activities, giving you the opportunity to influence the firm's financial strategy and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes and review reconciliations for accuracy.
- Analyze balance sheets and income statements, identifying and explaining significant fluctuations.
- Support accounting for property acquisitions, dispositions, and portfolio changes.
- Maintain fixed assets, insurance schedules, commissions, tenant billing, and CAM/Tax settle-ups.
- Lead, develop, and mentor accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team.
- Partner with operations, leasing, and property management teams to strengthen internal controls and improve processes.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, audits, and ad hoc reporting for leadership.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal policies.
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
- 5 years of accounting experience post-degree, including management experience.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, accrual and cash accounting, and commercial real estate accounting principles, CAM escalations & lease administration
- Proficient in Yardi or equivalent property management software and Microsoft Excel.
- Analytical, detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable
- Experience with retail, office, or industrial properties.
- Knowledge of integrated real estate accounting systems and processes.
