Our client is seeking an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Professional to support natural gas distribution construction and maintenance operations. This role is responsible for promoting a proactive safety culture by identifying workplace hazards, conducting risk assessments, ensuring regulatory compliance, and partnering with field leadership to protect employees, contractors, the public, and the environment.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on safety professional with experience supporting natural gas pipeline construction projects, capable of working independently while collaborating effectively with field operations and leadership.

THIS IS A 100% TRAVEL POSITION THAT QUALIFIES FOR DAILY TRUCK PAY & PER DIEM.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide HSE oversight for natural gas, water, and sewer utility construction and maintenance projects.
  • Conduct jobsite safety inspections and identify existing and potential hazards.
  • Perform risk assessments, hazard analyses, and electrical safety evaluations.
  • Participate in daily pre-job safety briefings and job hazard analyses.
  • Observe work practices and coach employees on safe work procedures and hazard recognition.
  • Conduct safety training and reinforce OSHA and company safety standards.
  • Inspect excavations, confined spaces, traffic control, overhead and underground utility work, and other high-risk activities.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and property damage events while performing root cause analysis and recommending corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, state, and local safety regulations, along with company policies and procedures.
  • Support return-to-work efforts by coordinating with occupational health professionals.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, reports, inspections, and incident records.
  • Partner with operations management to continuously improve safety performance and reduce risk.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Minimum 1–3 years of experience supporting natural gas pipeline construction or utility construction safety programs.
  • Working knowledge of natural gas distribution operations and pipeline construction practices.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT/FMCSA, and utility damage prevention regulations.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Understanding of 811 locate requirements and applicable excavation laws.
  • Ability to travel to urban, rural, and industrial job sites as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Utility journeyman certification or 5 years of utility construction experience.
  • Experience supporting electric, telecommunications, water, wastewater, or natural gas utility infrastructure projects.
  • Pipeline Operator Qualification (OQ) knowledge or certification.
  • Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
  • Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Desired Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong understanding of natural gas pipeline construction safety.
  • Knowledge of excavation safety, trenching and shoring requirements, confined space entry, traffic control, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Excellent communication and coaching skills with the ability to influence safe behaviors.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • High attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergency situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital safety reporting systems.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent walking on uneven terrain and active construction sites.
  • Ability to climb, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to travel regularly between project locations.
