About This Role

We are seeking an experienced and business-minded AVP, Senior Underwriter to help lead and grow our commercial property, E&S, and DIC book. This is a senior individual-contributor role with a leadership dimension: in addition to underwriting complex, high-value, and hard-to-place property risks, you will serve as a technical referral point for the underwriting team, mentor junior underwriters, own broker and distribution relationships, and help shape underwriting strategy and appetite. The ideal candidate combines deep technical property underwriting expertise with a proven track record of profitable production growth and strong market-facing relationships.

Roles and Responsibilities

•     Underwrite and analyze complex commercial property, E&S, and DIC risks for new and renewal business, including CAT-exposed, high-value, shared-and-layered, and manuscript-form accounts, ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.

•     Own and grow a profitable book of business, taking accountability for risk selection, pricing, profitability, retention, and growth across an assigned territory or portfolio.

•     Serve as a senior technical referral authority for the underwriting team; review and approve risks that exceed the authority of more junior underwriters and provide guidance on complex or unusual submissions.

•     Quote, rate, and bind business in the internal underwriting management system and carrier contract binding platforms, ensuring timely and accurate processing of quotes, binders, policies, and endorsements.

•     Perform location-level and peril-level exposure analysis, applying CAT modeling output and PML considerations to determine appropriate terms, conditions, pricing, limits, and deductibles.

•     Develop, maintain, and refine underwriting guidelines and best practices, ensuring alignment with industry standards, regulatory requirements, carrier requirements, and company objectives.

•     Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers, retail agents, and distribution partners; represent Hinterland in the marketplace to identify and pursue profitable new-business opportunities.

•     Negotiate terms and conditions and close deals, balancing underwriting discipline with production and service expectations.

•     Mentor, coach, and develop junior underwriters and underwriting assistants, supporting talent development within the team.

•     Monitor market trends, competitor activity, loss ratios, and portfolio performance; recommend adjustments to strategy and appetite in partnership with underwriting management.

•     Collaborate with internal partners including claims, actuarial, compliance, and operations to support the end-to-end underwriting process.

•     Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions, referrals, and policy endorsements; generate reports and communicate underwriting decisions to stakeholders as required.

Experience and Qualifications

•     7 years of commercial property underwriting experience, with meaningful exposure to E&S / non-admitted business; MGA, program administrator, wholesale, or carrier background strongly preferred.

•     Demonstrated experience underwriting CAT-exposed property, high-value and complex risks, shared-and-layered placements, and manuscript forms.

•     Proven track record of profitable production growth and new-business development, with established broker and distribution relationships.

•     Active Property & Casualty license required; surplus lines license and relevant professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM, AU) preferred.

•     Strong technical command of insurance policies, contracts, endorsements, and industry regulations across multiple states.

•     Experience serving as a technical referral point and/or mentoring junior underwriters.

•     Excellent analytical skills with the ability to assess complex risks and make sound, well-documented decisions.

•     Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with brokers, agents, carriers, and internal stakeholders.

•     Proficient in underwriting software, CAT modeling tools, carrier binding platforms, and MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).

•     Willingness to travel periodically to meet with brokers, agents, and distribution partners.
