What are the responsibilities and job description for the Software Engineer position at Hilt?
Company Description
Hilt provides real-time data security by deploying kernel-level sensors across cloud environments, endpoints, and networks to observe data movement as it occurs. The platform continuously learns behavioral baselines to detect anomalies, even when activity uses valid credentials and authorized channels. When suspicious behavior is identified, Hilt detects and contains it in under a second to minimize risk and impact. The team is focused on building high-performance, low-latency systems that operate at the core of modern infrastructure. Joining Hilt means contributing to security technology that protects critical data at scale.
Hilt is a seed-stage security company building a new category of data protection. Every company moves its most valuable data across cloud, SaaS, endpoints, and AI agents all day, on access it granted on purpose. The tools companies already own watch each move in isolation, so a slow, deliberate theft that plays out one permitted step at a time slips past all of them. Nobody watches the pattern across those moves. That is the gap Hilt closes.
We work at the kernel level. Lightweight collectors watch data movement and resolve every move to a real human identity. Machine learning models score behavior, an agentic investigation layer writes up each finding in plain English, and the platform can isolate a compromised host at the network in time to act, all without ever reading the customer's data.
Our early customers are hedge funds, trading desks, and regulated financial firms, where a single breach can cost more than the company is worth. From there we extend to other high-sensitivity teams: AI infrastructure, healthcare, and legal. We are venture-backed and small, which means the people who join now shape both the product and the company.
Role Description
As a full-time Software Engineer at Hilt, you will design, build, and maintain backend services and systems that power our kernel-level sensor platform. You will write clean, efficient, and testable code, contribute to APIs and data pipelines, and help improve performance, reliability, and scalability. Day-to-day, you will collaborate with cross-functional teammates to define technical requirements, review code, troubleshoot production issues, and participate in design discussions. You will be expected to take ownership of features from concept through deployment, including documentation and monitoring.
This is an on-site role in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There is on-site housing thirty seconds from the office, plus a gym, sauna, steam room, and cold plunge, so the day is built around getting good work done and staying healthy while you do it. Snacks are provided.
Qualifications
We hire resume-blind. No degree requirement, no pedigree filter. We decide based on a real work sample drawn from the actual product, the same one for every candidate, so you earn the role by building rather than by your CV.
What we look for:
- Proficiency with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or your preferred AI coding tool.
- APIs, streaming & event-driven systems
- AWS, GCP, Azure, Terraform, Docker, K8s, etc.
- High standards and follow-through. You are the person nobody has to double-check.
- Genuine interest in the mission and in deep technical work. Curiosity about kernel-level systems, security, or ML is a real plus.
Bonus, not required: eBPF or kernel experience, security or detection-engineering background, ClickHouse or Kafka, or experience taking an early product from zero to one.
