What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Technician Training Program 2026 position at Hilo Benioff Medical Center?
This six-month to twelve-month, full-time (40 hours per week) training program provides hands-on experience in the perioperative environment combined with required HealthStream learning modules. Training is conducted entirely within the clinical setting under the guidance of experienced surgical team members.
Program Highlights:
Candidates with one year of Aide experience may qualify for entry-level Surgical Technician placement in accordance with union guidelines. Candidates without prior OR experience may be hired into an OR Aide level training appointment and transition into the Surgical Technician classification upon meeting program expectations.

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR OPERATING ROOM AIDE, ENTRY LEVEL
Education: High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Experience: None Required.
Knowledge and Abilities: Must demonstrate knowledge of the English language and the ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate effectively with others in English; listen to and follow oral and written instructions precisely; learn decontamination and sterilization procedures, aseptic techniques, universal precautions and safety procedures; get along well with others; and participate in the activities of the surgical team.
Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR OPERATING ROOM AIDE, FULL PERFORMANCE
In addition to the qualifications required at the entry level:
Experience: One (1) year of work experience in a surgical setting where the primary or basic objective was to provide support to a surgery crew for perioperative patients under the direction and the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee.
Knowledge and Abilities: Must have provided knowledge of decontamination and sterilization procedures; aseptic techniques; universal precautions and safety procedures; maintenance and care of equipment; names of surgical equipment; applicable hospital/facility/program policies and procedures; and the ability to independently adhere to safety/infection control policies; perform proper documentation in the electronic health records; and assist and participate in the activities of the surgical team.

Experience and Essential Knowledge and Abilities: One (1) year of work experience which involved independently decontaminating and sterilizing instruments used in surgical cases; and setting up of instrument trays. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of decontamination and sterilization procedures; aseptic techniques; universal precautions and safety procedures; maintenance and care of equipment; names of surgical equipment; and the ability to assist in the preparation of surgical patients and assist and participate in the activities of the surgical team.
Substitutions Allowed: Graduation from a nationally certified training program for Operating Room Technician, Surgical Technician, or equivalent may be substituted for the experience required for the entry level.
