Oliver neighborhood of Pittsburgh, HUF provides fresh produce to the Hilltop community emergency food system and facilitates community events, youth programs, and educational opportunities for current and future farmers. Job Summary

Hilltop Urban Farm is seeking a positive, reliable, and dedicated individual to support our after-school youth programming during the 2026–2027 school year. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for education, strong leadership skills, and experience working with children. As a vital part of our team, you will foster a positive atmosphere that promotes learning, creativity, and community engagement.

The After-School Program Coordinator will primarily lead after-school programming at HUF's school and community partner sites, providing hands-on educational activities focused on gardening, food, agriculture, and the natural environment. Most after-school programming takes place indoors at partner sites, with some activities taking place at HUF.

This is a part-time, temporary position and an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in youth development, education, sustainable agriculture, food systems, or community-based programming.

The After-School Program Coordinator will report to the Director of Farm Programs.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead engaging, hands-on after-school programming with HUF's school and community partners.
  • Prepare and deliver existing HUF youth lessons and activities, adapting programming as needed for different ages, group sizes, and settings.
  • Recommend and, as appropriate, design new diverse activities that strengthen HUF’s youth programming.
  • Develop and maintain positive professional working relationships with youth program partners, students, families, and HUF staff.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe learning environment for participating youth.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain materials and supplies needed for youth programming.
  • Track participation and other basic program information and assist with program evaluation as needed.
  • Communicate and meet regularly with the Director of Farm Programs regarding schedules, program needs, challenges, and successes.
  • Assist with additional Youth Farm programming and activities as scheduling and program needs allow.

Competencies and Attributes

  • Flexible and adaptable to changing needs and conditions.
  • Dependable and able to make sound decisions independently.
  • Ability to build strong, genuine professional relationships with a diverse set of individuals.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Natural interest and curiosity in youth programming, urban agriculture, food security, and/or environmental education.
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and creating positive, hands-on learning experiences.

Qualifications

  • Experience in youth development and/or education including working in a school, after-school, camp, childcare, recreation, or similar setting.
  • Experience or interest in farming, gardening, environmental education, or food systems.
  • Ability to travel reliably to Hilltop Urban Farm and partner program sites (all within 3 miles of HUF).
  • Applicants must pass required criminal and child-abuse background checks as a condition of employment.
  • Prior experience in program development within educational or community-based organizations is advantageous.

Schedule and Compensation

The After-School Program Coordinator is a temporary, hourly position running from November 2026 through May 2027.

Weekly hours will vary based on the program schedule and school calendar. November through January will be a lighter programming period, with approximately 5–8 hours per week anticipated. Beginning in February, weekly hours are expected to increase, generally ranging from 10–15 hours per week through May.

Most programming will take place during weekday afternoon and after-school hours (3–6 p.m.), with additional time allocated for preparation, coordination, and program documentation.

Compensation starts at $16/hour and is commensurate with experience. There may be an opportunity for this position to grow into a full-time role with HUF beyond May 2027, based on organizational needs, funding, and mutual interest.
