The Electrical Designer works within the Engineering Department and is responsible for the electrical controls design and programming of highly specialized capital equipment and collaborative robot (co-bot) systems. This hands-on role requires strong technical expertise in electrical design, PLC/HMI programming, sensors, troubleshooting, and the creation/interpretation of engineering documentation. The role also supports robotics integration through Python-based scripting and automation tasks. While following established standards and precedents, the position allows latitude for independent judgment.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in an electrical-related field or a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong fundamentals in PLC programming, relay logic, AC/DC motor controls, and industrial automation.
  • Working knowledge of Allen-Bradley software platforms, including RSLogix 500, RSLogix 5000 (Studio 5000), FactoryTalk View, and PanelBuilder.
  • Clear understanding of motion control systems, including servo drives and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Working knowledge of Python for robotics support, including scripting for co-bot configuration, basic automation tasks, and interfacing with robot controllers (experience with robotics APIs/SDKs such as Universal Robots, FANUC, or similar is a plus).
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical issues, with the ability to assist customers both over the phone and on-site.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively instruct and guide others.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar 2D CAD software for creating and editing engineering documentation.
  • Experience with co-bots or other robotic systems is preferred but not required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and configure PLCs and HMIs across major platforms.
  • Write and adapt Python scripts to support robotic system configuration, testing, and basic automation routines.
  • Manage and track projects while adhering to established schedules.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and internal teams.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to assemble electrical and mechanical components (including drives, reducers, belts, chains, pulleys, bearings, bushings, sensors, motors, and other devices) using hand and power tools.
  • Wire and cable assemblies according to schematics and technical specifications.
  • Inspect, test, and adjust completed equipment to ensure it meets specifications, tolerances, and customer requirements.
  • Complete all required documentation and paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Maintain high standards of quality, precision, and safety while paying close attention to detail and understanding customer needs.
  • Strictly follow all company safety policies at all times.
  • Travel up to 25% of the time (including occasional overnight stays) as required.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to work occasional overtime (days, evenings, or weekends) when necessary.
