Duties and Responsibilities

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all the activities described below.
- Disassembles locks and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts; installs new or serviceable locks when required.
- Changes lock combinations by shortening tumblers or inserting new or repaired tumblers and rekeys locks for security purposes.
- Sets up and maintains computerized master key systems.
- Cuts new or duplicate keys, using key cutting machine.
- Unlocks doors, lockers, safes, or other equipment when keys or combinations are missing.
- Installs, repairs, and modifies electric locks, automatic door closures and emergency exit devices.
- Interprets manufacturer's instructions and diagrams.
- Requisitions and maintains replacement parts in stock to permit completion of repairs.
- Installs and repairs low voltage lock systems.
- Installs and repairs detention and institutional locks.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Job Specifications
- Knowledge of locksmith methods, techniques, and tools.
- Knowledge of card access systems.
- Knowledge of low voltage electrical systems.
- Skill in the use of locksmith tools and equipment.
- Ability to use a computer and related software.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
Physical Requirements
- The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Category

Minimum Qualifications Required
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
- Two years of experience as a locksmith, OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Emergency Management Responsibilities
In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

- Maintain the ability to pass the background checks required for the position. These background checks may include but are not limited to:
- Criminal History Background Check using Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)
- Level 1 and Level 2 Background screening (Ch. 435 Florida Statutes)
- Child Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect Record Check using the State Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS)
- Sex Offender and Sexual Predator record check using the list maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)
- Possess the necessary job-related license(s) or certification(s) that may include possession of a Florida Driver License (Class E) or an applicable Commercial Driver License (CDL).
