POSITION SUMMARY

Guards school against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. Provides the security and/or safety of all property owned by Hillsboro R-3 School District. Ensures a safe and secured environment for all students, faculty and staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Patrols the interior and exterior of Hillsboro High School and High School-sponsored activities by foot or district vehicle as appropriate.
  • Examine doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure.
  • Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and apprehends/detains persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts.
  • Inspects equipment and machinery to ascertain if tampering has occurred.
  • Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, fire and security alarms, exit lights, leaking water pipes, road hazards and security doors left unlocked.
  • Informs the Assistant Superintendent of any vehicle violations during/outside of work that warrant a traffic ticket or may hinder the validity of Drivers License.
  • Records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment, for use by supervisory staff.
  • Assists with student arrival and dismissal procedures, monitors traffic flow at Hillsboro High School, and helps maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle movement.
  • Ensures bus loading and unloading areas are clear and ready at the appropriate times of the day.
  • Assists with traffic control during student arrival, dismissal, athletic events, and other High School activities as assigned.
  • Transports district mail, packages, and other authorized materials between district facilities, the post office, and the bank through scheduled district mail runs.
  • Enforces Hillsboro High School parking regulations and assists with parking management during school and extracurricular events.
  • Investigates the reason for a student's absence, as requested and authorized by school personnel.
  • Sounds alarm or calls police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Completes incident reports and daily activity logs and submits documentation to the Assistant Superintendent or designee.
  • Responds to student discipline, behavioral concerns, medical emergencies, and safety incidents at Hillsboro High School. Assists administrators as requested and responds to bus-related incidents when directed.
  • Reports major incidents, problems and/or hazards immediately to the proper authority, fire or police department, superintendent, assistant superintendent, building principal, or maintenance supervisor, whichever is most appropriate.
  • Be helpful to staff, students and parents.
  • Unlock car doors, help in assisting students.
  • Be as non-confrontational as possible.
  • Be professional in dealing with people during all activities, try to keep situations from escalating.
  • Maintain the routine of responsibilities on one's shift, any changes need to be discussed with the work partner and supervisor.
  • Each shift covers for the other shift when one is absent.
  • Uniforms are to be neat and clean, with black shoes.

MARGINAL DUTIES

  • Assists with crowd management and security during High School athletic events, performances, graduations, and other extracurricular activities.
  • Assists with district emergency response as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent or Building Principal.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or a minimum of 240 hours of academy training in the areas of safety, security, and policy work.
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Valid and current Drivers License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear.

MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality; communicate clearly both orally and in writing.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, may work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to work in high, precarious places; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold (weather); extreme heat (weather) and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • This individual may be exposed to potentially hazardous bodily fluids.

Pay: $17.25 - $24.50 per hour
