School Crossing Guard

POSITION TITLE

2521 PERMANENT PART-TIME SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD                                                   

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs responsible human support and protective service work in stopping and directing traffic in conjunction with the moving of children to and from school; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the school principal.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, standing, and walking swiftly; mobility in movement and stature; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

• Assisting children with crossing the street while going to/from school.
• Stops and controls vehicular traffic at designated crossing to allow children to cross safely;
• Controls children using the crossing to assure that they conform to traffic regulations;
• Takes appropriate action with children who fail to cooperate and reports such action to immediate supervisor;
• Reports motorists who fail to observe safe motor vehicle operation in school crossing zone;
• Checks traffic signals for proper operation; reports malfunctions;
• Directs traffic when necessary; stops traffic to allow school bus to enter and exit school property;
• Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of traffic regulations; general knowledge of school locations and traffic patterns; ability and willingness to work in inclement weather throughout the year; ability to follow oral and written instructions; dependability; courtesy; tact.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
