Job Description: Adjunct, Specialized Transportation (Truck Driving Academy)

Reports To: Dean of Job Workforce and Training Partnerships                                                                                                                                   FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Summary: The Adjunct Instructor for Specialized Transportation provides advanced classroom and hands-on training for the Hill College Truck Driving Academy. This part-time position supports the instruction of specialized heavy haul and Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) operations, focusing on advanced driving skills, safety awareness, and compliance with all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations. The instructor ensures that students are well-prepared to meet industry standards for safe and efficient operation of specialized transport equipment.

Minimum Required

Education:                                        High school diploma or GED required

                                                          Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution preferred 


Minimum Required 

Experience:                                    Three (3) to five (5) years of verifiable, recent experience driving oversize/overweight permitted heavy haul loads and/or LCV doubles or triple trailers.

 

                                                          Instructional or on-the-job training experience preferred, particularly in the specialized transportation or heavy haul industry


Required Certifications

and Qualifications:                        Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Doubles/Triples  endorsement

 

                                                           Verifiable, clean driving record as a CDL operator

 

                                                           Meets all qualifications for an LCV driver-instructor as defined by  FMCSA in 49 CFR § 380.111 

    


Core Duties and 

Required Knowledge:                   Deliver classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction on Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) operations, safety, and FMCSA compliance.

                                                          Provide engaging, hands-on training in advanced driving techniques, coupling/uncoupling, and defensive driving for specialized transport.

                                                          Instruct students in heavy haul logistics, advanced load securement, and the permitting and routing processes for oversize/overweight loads.

                                                          Assess student progress through written exams, driving evaluations, and practical skill assessments.

                                                          Teach advanced pre-trip inspection procedures and preventative maintenance techniques for LCVs.

                                                          Maintain accurate and timely student records, including attendance, performance, and evaluation results.

                                                          Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations governing commercial vehicle instruction.

                                                          Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional support to students throughout their training.

                                                          Demonstrate expert-level understanding of LCV theory, specialized equipment operation, and FMCSA regulations, particularly 49 CFR Part 380.

                                                          Apply working knowledge of heavy haul power units, articulated trailers, and industry-standard safety protocols.

                                                          Maintain a strong commitment to student success, professionalism, and the mission of Hill College.

Collaboration:                               Demonstrates a commitment to maintaining a welcoming and safe environment that provides a sense of belonging for all.

                                                          Work collaboratively with the Director of the Truck Driving Academy and other instructional staff to ensure consistent, high-quality training delivery.

                                                          Serve as a professional representative of Hill College in interactions with students, staff, and community partners.

Other Information:                       This is a part-time, adjunct position; hours are not guaranteed and are dependent on class demand and enrollment

                                                           Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license

                                                           Security-sensitive position

 

Physical Requirements:               Medium work; exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of force greater than that for Sedentary Work.

                                                          Ability to sit for extended periods while operating or instructing in a commercial vehicle

                                                          Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb in and out of trucks and trailers multiple times per day

                                                          Sufficient vision and hearing to safely observe and evaluate student performance

                                                          Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) while conducting training activities
