Position Overview

The Project Manager (PM) is an experienced construction professional responsible for successfully delivering healthcare construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role manages one or more projects at a time, with a strong emphasis on safety, regulatory compliance, infection control, and client satisfaction within active or occupied healthcare environments. The PM serves as the Owner’s primary point of contact for all business, contractual, and operational matters and works in close partnership with the Project Superintendent and Project Executive. This position splits time between the office and field, with frequent site visits and potential full-time on-site presence depending on project needs.

This role is ideal for candidates with a strong background in healthcare construction, including hospitals, medical office buildings, surgical centers, specialty clinics, and other regulated healthcare facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead healthcare construction projects with a strong focus on safety, quality, schedule, budget, and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Higley Construction, healthcare system representatives, facilities teams, clinicians, architects, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Manage projects within active healthcare environments, demonstrating a clear understanding of operational sensitivity, patient safety, and facility continuity.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare-specific requirements including ICRA, PCRA, ANSI standards, interim life safety measures (ILSM), and infection control protocols.
  • Successfully plan, execute, and manage project schedules with critical milestones while minimizing disruption to ongoing healthcare operations.
  • Lead cost management efforts including budgeting, forecasting, change management, and P&L reporting.
  • Identify and manage project risks associated with healthcare construction, including phasing, logistics, interim conditions, and regulatory oversight.
  • Review and negotiate subcontractor and supplier agreements, ensuring alignment with healthcare standards and owner requirements.
  • Oversee quality control measures and proactively address common healthcare construction challenges.
  • Facilitate and lead Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) and subcontractor meetings.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with healthcare clients to support repeat work and future business opportunities.
  • Mentor and lead Project Engineers and other project team members, ensuring consistency with healthcare project standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and leadership when navigating complex project challenges and sensitive situations.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Skills And Abilities

  • Strong understanding of healthcare construction workflows, regulatory requirements, and owner expectations.
  • Ability to effectively manage construction activities in occupied or operational healthcare facilities.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to interact confidently with clinical staff, facilities teams, executives, and consultants.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think proactively in high-risk, fast-paced environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  • Proficiency in construction software and willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Solid understanding of construction accounting, cost forecasting, and healthcare project financial controls.
  • Ability to “manage up” and communicate clearly with internal leadership and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive construction experience, with a strong preference for healthcare experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing healthcare projects such as hospitals, medical office buildings, surgical centers, or similar facilities.
  • Industry certifications are a plus, including but not limited to OSHA, USGBC, CMAA, ASHE, or Healthcare Construction Certificate (HCC).
  • Experience working within active healthcare environments strongly preferred.

Drug and Alcohol Screening Requirement

As part of your employment with Higley Construction, an initial pre-employment drug and alcohol test is required. This is followed by company-wide annual and random drug and alcohol testing for all employees for the duration of your employment. Job Requirements

This position is classified as safety-sensitive as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor. Responsibilities include climbing ladders, working on scaffolding, driving motor vehicles, and walking on roofs or other surfaces commonly found in a construction site environment.

Physical Activities: This role requires driving to and from office, jobsites, meetings, client locations, events, and other work-related locations as necessary. It also may require climbing ladders and scaffolding, riding in mobile elevated work platforms at heights of up to 80 feet, and entering and working in confined or tight spaces. It involves remaining in a stationary position—standing or sitting—for extended periods, as well as frequent movement between tasks or worksites, including walking on snow-covered or icy surfaces. The position requires lifting or adjusting objects, including weights ranging from 30 to 50 pounds without difficulty, as well as performing repetitive motions involving the hands, wrists, or fingers. Use of hands and arms to handle tools, equipment, and materials is frequent, and tasks may involve operating spray test equipment, construction site tools, power tools, machinery, and heavy equipment. Employees must be able to wear fall protection gear and respiratory protection.

Environmental Conditions: Work may take place in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to high and low temperatures, inclement weather such as rain, wind, and snow, and getting wet during specific tasks. The role may also involve working in dusty environments, areas with extreme noise, poor ventilation, and small or enclosed spaces. In some instances, no adverse environmental conditions are expected.
