THE OPPORTUNITY
Highline College (HC) is seeking qualified applicants for one full-time faculty lecturer position in the Mathematics Department. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to use equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning for racially, ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse students, including designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline(s) or program(s). Candidates should be able and excited to teach a variety of courses including Pre-Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Number Theory for K-8 Teachers, Geometry for K-8 Teachers, Math in Society, Introduction to Statistics, Math Methods (this is a 300-level course offered in the education department) in collaboration with Education and ELCAP (English Language, Career and Academic Prep) departments.  Our classes are offered during the day, evening, and weekends, on-campus, off-campus, and online. 

This position is also eligible for a legislature funded High-Demand stipend issued on a quarterly basis. Currently, the stipend amount is approximately $2,760 per quarter. Three quarter total of $8,280.

This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2026.Professional Responsibilities

  • Teaching: Create a welcoming and supportive learning environment and use evidence-based practices to improve the success of diverse students; in collaboration with colleagues, identify and implement strategies designed to close equity gaps experienced by students from historically minoritized groups. Engage in self-reflective practice. Lecturers teach the equivalent of 40 credits per academic year, typically 8 sections over Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters, including day/evenings/weekend, online, hybrid, and off-campus sections;

  • Advising/ Coaching/ Mentoring: Work with students outside of class to help them choose courses and get connected with campus and community resources. Participate in professional learning opportunities focused on student centered advising and establishing relationships with students;

  • Collaborate with colleagues/participate in shared governance: In collaboration with colleagues, engage in continuous improvement through college-wide assessment processes. Participate in department, division, and other College activities, including College governance. Establish and maintain respectful, ethical, and professional relationships with students and colleagues;

  • Professional development/ ongoing professional learning: Engage in ongoing professional learning. This includes remaining current in your discipline and evidence-based practices for non-discriminatory pedagogies.

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and/or a related field;
OR
  • Master’s in Teaching with emphasis in math and at least 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) of graduate level mathematics; AND
  • Minimum teaching or related work experience: One year of teaching experience, which may include previous community college, university, K-12, graduate school, teaching assistant, and/or substitute teaching.
    • Pending degrees must be completed by September 2026 and verified by a letter from the granting institution.

Desired Qualifications:

We desire a candidate with one or more of the following qualifications.  We expect the successful candidate to have only some of these qualifications.

  • Course work and/or training in Mathematics pedagogy/andragogy;

  • Significant experience working in multicultural/diverse environments;

  • Two years of community college teaching experience;

  • Experience teaching high school or middle school;

  • Demonstrated experience engaging in equity-minded teaching

  • Fluency in one or more languages other than English.


ABOUT THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT:

The Math Department at Highline College consists of 11 tenured faculty members and offers a range of courses from pre-college through Differential Equations. During the 2023-2024 school year the department offered 30 sections of Developmental Mathematics courses, 28 sections of General Education Mathematics (GEM) courses, 36 sections of Statistics and 71 sections of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses. We offer about 48 sections of mathematics classes each quarter, making us one of the largest departments on campus.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 

A standard 170-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.

This is a union-represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Prior to employment, the candidate must complete a sexual misconduct declaration form, and pass a sexual misconduct check.
