JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Part-time custodian
Supervisor: Church Administrator
General Description of Position:
The Church Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment within the church building. This role includes regular cleaning of key areas, periodic deep cleaning of additional spaces, and ensuring that the facility is well-maintained for worship services, meetings, community groups, and events. The Church Custodian also assists with setting up and taking down equipment for activities and events held in the church.
Staff Relationships:
This position is supervised directly by the Church Administrator, under the guidance of the Lead Pastor and the Trustees. The individual in this role will need to interact with other staff members and the congregation. Additionally, the person in this position is expected to fulfill requests from other staff members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SHALL INCLUDE:
Perform all assigned custodial duties, which may include the following tasks:
- Ensure daily cleanliness of the building and surrounding grounds by utilizing the appropriate supplies and equipment while prioritizing safety.
- Responsibilities include cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning windows, and emptying and disposing of trash.
- Perform such outdoor tasks as needed throughout the year (, lawn mowing, shoveling snow, spreading ice melt, picking up trash)
- General Cleaning: Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust all areas of the church, including the sanctuary, offices, Parish Hall, and youth areas.
- Restroom Sanitation: Thoroughly clean and sanitize toilets, sinks, and mirrors. Also, restock essential items such as soap and paper towels.
- Event Setup and Cleanup: Arrange chairs, tables, and equipment for services, meetings, and events, and ensure that the area is cleaned up afterward.
- Maintenance and Security: Empty trash and recycling bins, change light bulbs, and monitor the HVAC system. Be vigilant about security regarding individuals entering church properties, and assist staff with any security issues raised by visitors.
- Safety and Upkeep: Clean up spills, sanitize high-touch areas, and maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies.
- Minor Maintenance: Perform minor maintenance tasks based on your skills and the availability of resources. Report any major repairs needed for facilities or systems to the Church Administrator. Assist as requested.
- Outdoor Care: Occasionally perform basic maintenance tasks such as picking up litter, monitoring walkways, mowing the lawn, and snow removal.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Eligibility for this position requires that the person have already demonstrated the following:
- Demonstrated skill in maintaining confidentiality.
- Have own transportation to and from work at all hours necessary.
- Be a self-starter without daily supervision.
- Follow through on assignments and daily duties.
- Able to operate light electrical cleaning and maintenance equipment
- Experience in building maintenance or handyman work.
- Excellent communication and people skills.
- Constructively handle stress and pressure.
- A strong team-orientation that relates comfortably and confidently to church leadership, peers, and subordinates, cultivating strong, quality relationships for the church and its leaders.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands are representative of those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as cleaning supplies, pails, tables, chairs, carts, salt, trash, and bulk furniture. The position will require bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, sitting, standing, and climbing. The employee will sometimes push/pull items and use hand strength to grasp tools and climb on ladders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCES:
- High School diploma required.
- Two years of working experience in a custodial/maintenance environment.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Pay: $13.00 - $15.00 per hour
