The Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools serves 1600 students from PreK-12 and is a free, open-enrollment public charter school. Over 92% of our students are Latinx. Our school system consists of Guadalupe Centers High School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School, and Guadalupe Centers Elementary School. Our system grew out of Guadalupe Centers’ educational programming. Guadalupe Centers is the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the US since 1919. Our roots in our community run deep.

Position Summary

 

The Girls Head Basketball Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the girls basketball program. This role focuses on building a competitive and developmentally appropriate program that promotes student-athlete growth, teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. The Head Coach ensures a safe, structured, and positive environment while maintaining compliance with school, district, and MSHSAA guidelines. This is a seasonal position based at Guadalupe Centers High School.

Athletic Director and Building Principal (or designee)

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and lead all practices, games, and team activities.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive basketball program, including skill development, conditioning, and game strategy.

  • Teach and model basketball fundamentals, rules, and advanced strategies.

  • Establish and enforce expectations for behavior, discipline, and team culture.

  • Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and games.

  • Evaluate student-athletes and make fair and appropriate team selection decisions.

  • Develop and execute game strategies, including player rotations and adjustments.

  • Ensure compliance with all MSHSAA, district, and school policies and requirements.

  • Maintain accurate rosters, eligibility documentation, and required reports.

  • Oversee and manage equipment, uniforms, and athletic facilities.

  • Coordinate schedules, transportation, and logistics in collaboration with the Athletic Director.

  • Build strong relationships with students, families, staff, and the school community.

  • Promote program growth through student recruitment, camps, and off-season development opportunities.

  • Provide leadership and supervision to assistant coaches.

  • Model professionalism in communication, conduct, and appearance.

  • Provide first aid and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Participate in required trainings and professional development.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and program-building skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, and coaching strategies.

  • Ability to motivate and develop student-athletes at varying skill levels.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage a team and coaching staff effectively.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism in high-pressure situations.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred OR service as an approved Assistant Coach for a minimum of two school years (per MSHSAA guidelines).

  • Valid teaching certificate preferred OR completion of the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course (one-time requirement).

  • Successful completion of:

    • Sports First Aid (renewed every two years)

    • CPR/AED certification (renewed every two years)

    • Concussion in Sports Course (with annual review)

    • MSHSAA sport-specific rules review each season

  • Minimum of three years of coaching experience preferred.

  • Previous head coaching experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and actively participate for extended periods.

  • Ability to move throughout gymnasiums and athletic facilities.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends during the season.
