The Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools serves 1600 students from PreK-12 and is a free, open-enrollment public charter school. Over 92% of our students are Latinx. Our school system consists of Guadalupe Centers High School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School, and Guadalupe Centers Elementary School. Our system grew out of Guadalupe Centers’ educational programming. Guadalupe Centers is the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the US since 1919. Our roots in our community run deep.

Position Summary

 

The Cross Country Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in developing and managing the cross country program. This role focuses on assisting with training, conditioning, and promoting endurance, discipline, and sportsmanship among student-athletes. The Assistant Coach helps maintain a safe, structured, and positive environment while ensuring compliance with school, district, and MSHSAA guidelines. This is a seasonal position based at Guadalupe Centers High School.

 

Reports To

 

Head Coach, Athletic Director, and Building Principal (or designee)

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and implementing practices, meets, and team activities.

  • Support instruction in running techniques, conditioning, pacing, and race strategy.

  • Promote safe training practices and monitor student-athlete well-being during workouts.

  • Reinforce expectations for behavior, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

  • Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and meets.

  • Assist with evaluation of student-athletes and support team development.

  • Help coordinate meet-day logistics, including warm-ups, race preparation, and supervision.

  • Ensure compliance with all MSHSAA, district, and school policies and requirements.

  • Assist with maintaining equipment and supporting program organization.

  • Support communication with student-athletes and families as directed by the Head Coach.

  • Promote participation and off-season conditioning opportunities.

  • Model professionalism in communication, conduct, and appearance.

  • Provide first aid and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Complete all required trainings and certifications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of cross country training, conditioning, and race strategies.

  • Ability to support and motivate student-athletes.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to supervise students in outdoor and active environments.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism in a fast-paced environment.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred OR service as an approved Assistant Coach for a minimum of two school years (per MSHSAA guidelines).

  • Completion of the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course (one-time requirement, if not a certified teacher).

  • Successful completion of:

    • Sports First Aid (renewed every two years)

    • CPR/AED certification (renewed every two years)

    • Concussion in Sports Course (with annual review)

    • MSHSAA sport-specific rules review each season

  • Previous coaching or running experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and actively participate for extended periods.

  • Ability to run or demonstrate endurance-based activities as needed.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends during the season.
