Boys Assistant Basketball Coach

Position Summary
The Boys Assistant Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in developing and managing the basketball program. This role focuses on assisting with skill development, game preparation, and fostering a positive team culture that promotes sportsmanship, discipline, and student-athlete growth. The Assistant Coach helps ensure a safe, structured, and engaging environment while supporting compliance with school, district, and MSHSAA guidelines. This is a seasonal position based at Guadalupe Centers High School.

Head Coach, Athletic Director, and Building Principal (or designee)
Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in planning and conducting practices, games, and team activities.

Support instruction of basketball fundamentals, rules, and strategies.

Reinforce expectations for student behavior, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and games.

Assist with evaluation of student-athletes and team selection processes.

Support game preparation, including drills, conditioning, and player development.

Help implement game strategies and provide in-game coaching support.

Ensure compliance with all MSHSAA, district, and school policies and requirements.

Assist with maintaining equipment, uniforms, and facilities.

Support coordination of team logistics, including schedules and transportation.

Build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.

Promote student participation and off-season development opportunities.

Model professionalism in communication, conduct, and appearance.

Provide first aid and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

Complete all required trainings and certifications.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree preferred OR service as an approved Assistant Coach for a minimum of two school years (per MSHSAA guidelines).

Completion of the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course (one-time requirement, if not a certified teacher).

Successful completion of:

Sports First Aid (renewed every two years)
-
CPR/AED certification (renewed every two years)
-
Concussion in Sports Course (with annual review)

MSHSAA sport-specific rules review each season

Previous coaching or playing experience preferred.
Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, and actively participate for extended periods.

Ability to move throughout gymnasiums and athletic facilities.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Ability to work evenings and weekends during the season.
