Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent / Some Trade School / 6 months to 2 years trade school certification and 4 years of fire alarm and/or security experience
  • Minimum of 40 HRFS Career Points and 2 years of installation experience 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct visual inspection for wear and tear on all fire alarm devices to include fire alarm control panel, batteries, data gathering panel (DGPs), notification appliances, initiating devices, and remote annunciators as per NYC, NFPA, and HRFS requirements
  • Conduct mechanical testing on all applicable fire alarm devices as per NYC, NFPA, and HRFS requirements
  • Conduct test and response on all applicable fire alarm devices as per NYC, NFPA, and HRFS requirements
  • Sanitize all fire alarm devices for proper upkeep and maintenance
  • Serve as lead technician on a small installation job, i.e. addition, by managing client relationship on site, providing onsite training to junior technicians, leading the onsite safety briefings (“Toolbox Talks”), and monitoring technician parts to maintain adequate stock levels
  • Respond to service requests
  • Read and understand system status on Fire Alarm Control Panel (condition, address, device)
  • Conduct diagnostic tests to determine cause of alarm and/or trouble system status, as well as ground faults
  • Requisition required parts when necessary to repair problem
  • Adjust, replace, or repair defective device(s) to meet NYC, NFPA, and HRFS requirements
  • Conduct testing on all repaired devices as per NYC, NFPA, and HRFS requirements
  • Identify code issues and non-conformance issues, and make recommendations on alternative solutions to client/office
  • Elevate status of service call to Programming Unit as required
  • Study blueprints and schematics and determine methods, materials, and equipment needed to complete assignment
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters and voltmeters to ensure compatibility and safety of system
  • Perform technician routine maintenance on tools, test equipment, etc.
  • Plan the layout of wiring systems; measure, cut, and bend wire conduits
  • Thread conduit ends, connect couplings, and fabricate and secure conduit support brackets
  • Drill holes and pull or push wiring through openings
  • Dig trenches or holes for installation of conduit or supports
  • Strip insulation from wire ends and attach wires to terminals for subsequent soldering
  • Install electrical and electronic control systems and insulated cables
  • Assemble and fabricate electrical and electronic components and appliances
  • Connect electrical power to sound and visual communication equipment, signaling devices, and heating and cooling systems
  • Test completion of circuits using test equipment
  • Test for, locate, and repair electrical malfunctions in wiring and parts
  • Paint a variety of objects related to electrical functions
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment and keep parts and supplies in order
  • Ensure job site is left in a better state than when we started 
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients on job scope and with line manager and report on progress on a regular basis
  • Maintain accurate records of all work performed, materials used, and communicate any problem encountered or identified with the alarm system on work order
  • Generate system status reports upon completion of testing and inspecting
  • Maintain positive client relations through professional interactions with clients 

Skills and Knowledge

  • Full knowledge of fire alarm systems and operation, and fire alarm terminologies
  • Ability to interpret and apply blueprints, schematics and drawings, maintenance manuals, and assembly instructions
  • Understanding and application of NYC Building codes and NFPA fire alarm codes
  • Familiarity with all local electrical codes, i.e. Article 760 of National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Full knowledge of fire alarm products, EST products preferred
  • Strong technical and analytical skills, i.e. diagnosing the cause of electrical breakdowns
  • Ability to make recommendations on alternative solutions to client / office
  • Ability to function in a self-directed environment
  • Effective use of hand tools (meter, toner, etc.)
  • Understanding of basic electronics and electrical theories and principles (Ohm’s Law, AC/DC, etc.)
  • Ability to demonstrate the safe use of ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and related equipment required
  • Knowledge of proper grounding and bonding methods
  • Familiarity with electrical equipment and proper terminology, and an understanding of the dangers of live electricity
  • Ability to make mathematical computations and color coding, and possess manual dexterity 
  • Acceptable report writing procedures
  • Good listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Understanding of all company policies and procedures
  • Ability to demonstrate the HRF client service model after having completed the training 

Certifications and Trainings

  • Possess S-78 certification or obtain it within 3 months of hire
  • Ten-Hour OSHA Construction Safety Certification
  • Four-Hour DOB Scaffolding Certification within 3 months of hire
  • Completion of HRF Client Service and technical training within the first 3 months of hire
  • Obtain and maintain S-98 certification within 3 months of hire
