Job Overview:

o Employment is contingent upon the results of a background and motor vehicle record check.

o Work Schedule: Work schedule is full-time from now through the end of the season (hours and end of season dependent on weather) with an anticipated end date approximately end of November, close to Thanksgiving . The weekly schedule is M-F 7:00 AM-3:00PM.

o Job Description: The High Plains Environmental Center is providing a unique and rewarding seasonal employment opportunity, approximately August through November, for individuals willing to conduct invasive species management, native plant management, landscape maintenance, as well as other duties as needed. This position will be primarily focused on vegetation management, but may include park maintenance and visitor management as well. This position will occasionally work with other seasonal staff on other HPEC projects (landscaping, nursery, etc.). Some of the work will take place on the High Plains Environmental Center’s 275 acre open space. The natural areas team also manages over 650 acres of open space throughout the Front Range. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge pertaining to native and non-native plants, initiative to work unsupervised, desire to work outdoors, and be able to walk several miles with a 25-lb pack in varied weather conditions.

Job Specific Details:

· Identify noxious weeds.

· Keep accurate and thorough records.

· Operate and repair spray equipment.

· Read and understand herbicide product labels.

· Mix, load, and apply herbicides in full accordance with label.

· Operate mowing, weed whacking, and other landscape equipment.

· Record new noxious weed infestations.

· Interact with park visitors and private property owners.

· Perform duties safely and conscientiously in high-traffic recreational areas.

· Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.

Skills/ Qualifications: (Not required but beneficial)

· Knowledge of basic ecology and plant life cycles.

· Knowledge of noxious weeds and IPM control methods.

· Rules, regulations, and laws pertaining to Colorado Noxious Weed Law and herbicide application.

· Procedures necessary to repair and maintain equipment used in vegetation management.

· Natural resources management concepts and principals.

· Identify rangeland vegetation, including noxious weed species during different stages of growth.

· Operate a truck, trailer, tractor, UTV, and spray equipment skillfully and safely.

· Measure and mix herbicides.

· Communicate effectively.

· Walk several miles while carrying a backpack weighing up to 40 pounds.

· Work alone and unsupervised.

· Perform arduous physical labor outdoors, during inclement weather, and for extended periods of time.

· Coursework in biology or physical sciences is a plus.

· Possession of, or ability to obtain, Commercial Applicators herbicide license.

· Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate State Driver's License.
