We are seeking an Operations Manager / General Manager to lead our transportation, home services, and fleet repair facility in Salina, KS. This is a hands-on leadership role with a start-up company responsible for overseeing a team of 30-40 transportation delivery drivers, vehicle mechanics, and customer service representatives. Our company dispatches 20 transportation routes each day from Salina, requiring us to meet KPIs for safe driving, on-time delivery, and customer service. Meanwhile, we're in the process of acquiring a facility to maintain our own fleet as well as to external customers. As Operations Manager, you'll be the Site Leader for our team in Salina to ensure that these three business units operate safely, profitably, and in cohesion with one another.

The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneur at heart, excited to bring their prior leadership experience in transportation, logistics, fleet maintenance, or a related field to help us fully ramp up our new facility in Salina. Additionally, candidates for this leadership position must possess strong organizational skills, a solid understanding of vehicle maintenance processes, and the ability to communicate effectively with both internal teams and external vendors. As Operations Manager, this general management role will provide you will ownership over our business strategy in Salina, KS including efforts to improve safety, profitability, customer service, and employee engagement. This is a hands-on leadership role based in a warehouse environment where you will need to collect & analyze data, define standard work, drive initiatives, and partner with our client on continuous improvement initiatives.

Job Overview

The Operations Manager role will provide strategic vision, team leadership, and oversight of process execution for our transportation, fleet maintenance/vehicle repair, and vehicle rental businesses. This position will be the people leader to 30 hourly employees, while being responsible for defining required outcomes and milestones, setting performance targets and monitor performance relative to targets, and ensure delivery of needed results. At a glance, responsibilities for this role include:

  • Being a hands-on leader that is excited to get involved with all facets of our business, including delivery operations, fleet management, occupational safety, human resources, and expansion opportunities.
  • Overseeing the P&L, strategy, organizational development, and continuous improvement roadmap for our package delivery operations.
  • Building and leading a high-performance team that focuses on safety, operational excellence, and customer service.
  • Holding 30-40 direct reports accountable to the highest standards, setting clear goals and expectations while providing regular feedback and mentorship.
  • Recruiting, onboarding, training, and scheduling new employees to maintain reliable service year-round.
  • Continually assessing the status of the current management teams, developing action plans to address the developmental issues of each team member and following through on each manager’s progress.
  • Leading operational excellence in an entrepreneurial / start-up work environment where you will need to develop, launch, and stabilize processes.
  • Establish and evaluate KPIs for your business unit, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes to drive efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Monitoring and maintaining all cost centers; implementing cost savings programs and strong follow through on all systems to ensure labor and fleet cost targets are met.
  • Defining and ensuring implementation of Standard Operations Policies and Procedures, including service standards, across all locations.
  • Ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and municipal regulations along with client rules regarding employee safety, DOT operations, and training requirements.
  • Partnering with external clients to better support their business needs.
  • Leading from the front when necessary and doing whatever it takes to ensure operational success.
  • Helping to create a fun, safe, and rewarding work environment for all team members.
  • Coordinating and scheduling regular maintenance for all fleet vehicles to ensure optimal performance.
  • Monitoring vehicle inspections, repairs, and service records to maintain compliance with safety regulations.
  • Collaborating with mechanics and service providers to address repair needs promptly.
  • Generating reports on fleet performance, maintenance costs, and vehicle status for management review.
  • Assisting in budget planning for fleet maintenance activities.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license.
  • Due to our company operating DOT-regulated vehicles, must be able to pass a 5-panel drug test which includes testing for marijuana/cannabis/THC.
  • A bachelor's degree or master's degree in business administration, Operations Management, Process Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain, or a related field is preferred.
  • Exceptional communication skills in both written and verbal interactions; clear, concise, and courageous in giving challenging but supportive feedback when needed. Must possess a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Possesses the ability to effectively utilize technology tools in all aspects of the position. Prior experience with implementing new off-the-shelf technologies within an operation.
  • Leads by example and is respected for business judgment and operations expertise with strong ability to handle ambiguous situations while coaching team members through remote and in-person interactions.
  • An entrepreneur who thinks big with the ability to be the voice of reason and proponent for change; consistently questions the status quo. Must demonstrate critical thinking skills, anticipate issues before they arise, and proactively suggest short- and long-term solutions.

Base Pay: $70,200.00 - $82,200.00 per year
