Role Description The Assistive Technology/Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AT/AAC) Specialist is a full-time hybrid role based in Bend, OR, with some work-from-home flexibility. This role designs, implements, and supports AT and AAC solutions for students, collaborating with educators, related service providers, and families to ensure appropriate tools and strategies are in place. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting assessments, recommending devices and software, creating individualized communication systems, and training staff and caregivers in effective use of technology. The specialist maintains documentation, participates in IEP and team meetings, and provides ongoing technical and instructional support in school settings and remotely. The role also involves staying current with emerging AT/AAC tools and best practices to enhance student access, communication, and independence.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong analytical skills to assess student needs, interpret data, and evaluate the effectiveness of AT/AAC interventions.
- Candidates should possess clear and collaborative communication skills for working with students, families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Candidates should possess information technology skills for selecting, configuring, and troubleshooting assistive technologies, AAC devices, and related software.
- Candidates should possess project management skills to coordinate services, manage caseloads, and implement AT/AAC plans across multiple districts.
- Candidates should possess research skills to stay informed about current AT/AAC practices, tools, and evidence-based interventions.
- Relevant experience in special education, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or related fields supporting students with diverse communication and access needs.
- Knowledge of AAC systems (low-tech to high-tech), universal design for learning, and inclusive instructional practices.
- Ability to travel within Central Oregon districts and adapt to varied school environments.
- Preferred qualifications include a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree and professional certification or licensure in a related discipline, where applicable.
