Position Summary

The Foreman Metal Stud Framer & Drywall Hanger is responsible for leading the safe, efficient, and high-quality installation of commercial metal stud framing, drywall, sheathing, and related wall and ceiling systems.

This position plans and coordinates daily field activities, directs assigned employees, verifies layout and installation quality, monitors production, communicates labor and material needs, and serves as the primary field contact for the assigned scope of work.

The Foreman is expected to remain capable of performing the trade while focusing primarily on crew leadership, work planning, job-site coordination, safety enforcement, quality control, and production accountability.


Core Responsibilities

  • Lead assigned crews in the installation of commercial metal stud framing, drywall, exterior sheathing, backing, door frames, and related assemblies.
  • Plan daily and weekly work activities based on project schedules, available manpower, installation priorities, and site conditions.
  • Review project plans, specifications, details, wall types, schedules, submittals, and other contract documents before work begins.
  • Perform, verify, and communicate layout for walls, partitions, ceilings, soffits, bulkheads, door openings, and related assemblies.
  • Ensure framing and drywall installations comply with project drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements, building codes, and company quality standards.
  • Assign work based on employee skill level, project priorities, and production requirements.
  • Provide clear daily direction to apprentices and journeymen.
  • Monitor crew performance, productivity, attendance, safety, and quality.
  • Train and develop employees in trade skills, safe work practices, tool use, blueprint reading, layout, and installation methods.
  • Conduct daily pre-task planning, toolbox talks, and job hazard analysis activities as required.
  • Enforce company, general contractor, OSHA, and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Ensure employees use required PPE and are properly trained before operating equipment.
  • Identify required labor, materials, tools, lifts, scaffolding, and equipment before they are needed.
  • Prepare accurate material takeoffs and submit material requests by area or phase of work.
  • Track daily installed quantities, labor hours, production goals, and work completed.
  • Communicate staffing needs, production concerns, schedule impacts, and job-site constraints to field and project leadership.
  • Review labor performance and take appropriate action when production is below expectations.
  • Inspect completed work regularly and correct quality concerns before formal inspection.
  • Reduce rework by verifying layout, wall dimensions, board placement, fastening patterns, door-frame conditions, backing, and specialty assembly requirements.
  • Protect completed work and minimize material waste.
  • Coordinate framing and drywall activities with the general contractor, other subcontractors, inspectors, and supporting trades.
  • Identify field conflicts, missing information, plan discrepancies, and constructability concerns before they affect production.
  • Communicate requests for information, change conditions, and additional work to project leadership.
  • Attend required job-site meetings, coordination meetings, safety meetings, and company training.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, time records, production records, and other required project documentation.
  • Perform other related commercial duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated journeyman-level competency in commercial metal stud framing and drywall hanging.
  • Demonstrated experience leading employees or small crews on commercial construction projects.
  • Ability to independently plan, coordinate, and supervise framing and drywall installation activities.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial metal stud framing materials, drywall products, and related accessories.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, wall types, details, schedules, and field layout information.
  • Ability to perform and verify accurate layout.
  • Ability to understand and communicate production goals, installed quantities, labor hours, and material requirements.
  • Ability to lead daily safety planning and enforce job-site safety requirements.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with employees, supervisors, general contractors, and other trades.
  • Ability to train, coach, and hold employees accountable.
  • Dependable attendance and reliable transportation to assigned job sites.
  • Ability to perform physical construction work and access all areas of an active commercial job site.
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other approved work platforms.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry tools and construction materials weighing approximately 50-100 pounds and assist with team lifting heavier materials.

Recommended Experience

  • 6 or more years of commercial metal stud framing and drywall-hanging experience.
  • At least one year of experience leading a crew, serving as a Leadman, or performing foreman-level responsibilities.
  • Equivalent demonstrated competency may be accepted in place of a specific number of years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6 or more years of commercial framing and drywall experience.
  • Previous experience as a Foreman or Leadman on commercial construction projects.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • Current scissor lift, boom lift, forklift, scaffold, or other applicable equipment certifications.
  • Experience supervising multiple crews or work areas.
  • Experience preparing material takeoffs and tracking installed quantities.
  • Experience with daily reporting, timekeeping, production tracking, and quality-control documentation.
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam, PlanGrid, Procore, Fieldwire, or similar construction-document platforms.
  • Familiarity with estimating or takeoff software such as On-Screen Takeoff or Quick Bid.
  • Valid driver's license.
