JOB TITLE:  EARLY CHILDHOOD PRINCIPAL – ELEMENTARY (0204)

REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

DEPT./CAMPUS: CAMPUS ASSIGNED

PAY GRADE: A40

DUTY DAYS: 220

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: EXEMPT

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Direct and manage the instructional program and supervise operations at the campus level.  Provide instructional leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service. Direct the implementation of District policies and instructional programs and manage the operation of all campus activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

  • Master's degree in educational administration
  • Texas principal or other appropriate Texas certificate
  • Certified Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support Systems (T-TESS)
  • Certified teacher appraiser

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to coordinate campus functions
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

  • Five years’ successful experience as a classroom teacher
  • Two years’ successful experience in instructional leadership roles

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

 

Instructional Management:

  • Ensure high-quality instructional delivery aligned to district goals, state standards, and early childhood best practices.
  • Support teachers with lesson planning, instructional strategies, and assessments tailored for early learners.

School or Organization Morale:

  • Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.
  • Build a positive, inclusive, and nurturing school culture that values the unique strengths of every child, family, and staff member.
  • Recognize and celebrate student and staff achievements.
  • Provide for two-way communication with superintendent, staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Model and encourage empathy, respect, high expectations, and ethical standards in all interactions.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive environment that motivates staff and engages family involvement.
  • Foster collegiality and team building among staff members. Encourage their active involvement in decision-making processes.
  • Ensure the effective and quick resolution of conflicts.

School or Organization Improvement:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of the campus improvement plan with a focus on early childhood outcomes.
  • Use multiple sources of data to identify strengths, challenges, and areas for growth.
  • Establish systems to measure progress toward school goals and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Promote innovative practices to enhance early literacy, numeracy, and social skills aligned to the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines.

Personnel Management:

  • Recruit, hire, assign, and retain highly qualified teachers and staff with expertise in early childhood education.
  • Conduct regular staff observations, evaluations, and coaching to promote professional growth and instructional excellence.
  • Implement staff action plans as needed to support staff growth, non-renewal or termination.
  • Promote a collaborative culture that values teamwork and professional learning communities.

 

Management of Fiscal, Administrative, and Facilities Functions:

  • Comply with district policies and state and federal laws and regulations affecting the schools.
  • Ensure the facility is safe, child-friendly, and conducive to learning.
  • Coordinate with district personnel on maintenance, safety protocols, and compliance with all policies and regulations.
  • Develop campus budgets based on documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs. Keep programs within budget limits. Maintain fiscal control. Accurately report fiscal information.

Student Management:

  • Establish and enforce age-appropriate behavioral expectations that support each child’s development.
  • Implement positive behavior interventions and supports that reflect the developmental needs of young children.
  • Ensure equitable opportunities for all students, including those with special needs or requiring intervention.
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.
  • Conduct conferences about student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.
  • Provide ongoing opportunities for staff professional growth through training, coaching, and development specific to early childhood education.

Professional Growth and Development:

  • Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior. Serve as a role model for all campus staff.  

 

 School or Community Relations:

  • Build strong partnerships with parents and families, encouraging their active participation in the educational process.
  • Communicate effectively and frequently with stakeholders about school programs, progress, and events.

 

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONDSIBILITIES:

 

Supervise and evaluate the performance of staff assigned to the campus, including assistant principal(s), teacher(s), counselor(s), librarian(s), instructional aides, support staff, and clerical support staff.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

 

Personal computer, typewriter, printer, copier, calculator, and fax machine.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Occasional districtwide and statewide travel
  • Frequent, prolonged, and irregular hours
  • Frequent keyboarding
  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, twisting overhead reaching, keyboarding, exposure to weather, indoor and outdoor activity
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds to waist high
