Middle School Language Arts Teacher
DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:
Provide a quality language arts program for students in grades 6 through 8 or a combination thereof, and assists in other activities and school programs, as assigned.
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Principal/Superintendent or designee
QUALIFICATIONS:
CREDENTIALS:
• Professional Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential in Language Arts or a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential authorizing teaching grades K-8 with a language arts supplemental authorization.
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: First aide/CPR certificate (must be acquired during the employee’s probationary period) renewed annually.
PERSONAL QUALITIES:
• Well planned and well organized
• Appearance, grooming, and personality which creates a desirable example for students.
• Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health.
• Average or better recommendations from supervisors of student teaching or from other professionals who have first-hand knowledge of the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
• Ability to read and comprehend teacher manuals, professional journals, rules and regulations, and technical documents.
• Ability to write letters and reports.
• Ability to effective present information to large and small groups of students, co-workers, and parents of the District.
• Communicates clear expectations and provides high support structures for students.
REASONING ABILITIES:
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out basic or specific written or oral instructions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Committed to implementing the California English Language Arts standards.
2. Provides planned learning experiences which motivate pupils and achieves the maximum student on-task time.
3. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve an effective learning environment for students.
4. Conduct teaching and instructional activities, using educational equipment, materials, books and other learning aids.
5. Able to recognize, understand, and assess individual student’s needs and provide the necessary instruction.
6. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professionals in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, behavior, and learning problems.
7. Plan, develop, and utilize a variety of instructional materials and aids appropriate to the intellectual and instructional level of pupils from varied socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and who possess a range of mental and emotional maturity.
8. Pursue a variety of methodology in teaching and instructing pupils, including lectures, demonstrations, discussions, laboratory experiences and use of technology.
9. Participates in in-service education programs and activities authorized by the District, and develops a personal professional growth plan approved by the Superintendent/principal.
10. Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports, and communicates with parents regarding individual pupil’s progress.
11. Performs basic attendance accounting, gathers data, prepares reports, and updates records as assigned.
12. Uses students assessment results to diagnose student needs and differentiated instruction.
13. Administers standardized tests in accordance with the District’s testing program.
14. Participates in curriculum and program development on a District level.
15. Selects and purchases books, instructional materials, and equipment.
16. May plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, and volunteers.
17. Supervises students in and out-of-classroom activities.
18. Performs other related duties, as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Operate standard office or classroom equipment, including computer, calculator, copier, telephone/voice mail, fax machine, overhead projector, and data/video projector. Some classrooms may also be equipped with student response systems and wireless computer interface pads (e.g. Interwrite Pad).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of the job, the employee regularly works inside. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand; twist at neck and waist; kneel, use hands to manipulate or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently listens, hears, and talks. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments. May be required to lift or move up to 25 pounds. Heath Clearance - TB test every four years and drug test, when requested.
