Job DescriptionEast Hawaii Medical Group, an affiliate of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation's East Hawaii Region, is seeking a Coding Manager to join our Health Information Management team. The Coding Manager provides leadership and operational oversight for all coding functions across the health system, including professional fee (pro-fee) coding, inpatient and outpatient hospital facility coding, critical access hospital (CAH) coding, and long-term care coding where applicable. The position manages a blended workforce of in-house coders and contracted/vendor coders, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely code assignment. The manager collaborates closely with HIM leadership, Revenue Cycle, CDI, Compliance, and Medical Group operations to support financial performance, coding accuracy, and documentation quality.Location: This position allows for a hybrid (remote/in office) work environment, with a requirement for an incumbent living outside of Hilo to work on-site on the Big Island at regular intervals throughout the year (approximately four times per year for visits of approximately one week each). Airfare and lodging will be paid for by the organization, in accordance with our policies.Job DutiesManage daily operations for in-house and vendor coding teams across inpatient, outpatient, professional fee, CAH, and LTC services.Ensure adherence to CMS, OIG, AHIMA, AMA, and Hawai‘i state regulatory requirements.Supervise coding productivity, accuracy, and turnaround time to meet organizational KPIs.Oversee vendor coding operations including SLA compliance, QA processes, accuracy, and productivity standards.Lead internal coding quality audits and coordinate responses to external audits (MAC, RAC, CERT, payer audits).Maintain alignment between coding, CDI workflows, provider queries, and documentation improvement initiatives.Partner with revenue cycle leadership to minimize DNFC and DNFB, reduce coding-related denials, and optimize AR performance.Ensure accurate DRG, APC, and HCC code capture and support CMI stability.Collaborate with Epic analysts to optimize coding workqueues, coding workflows, and encoder/CAC integrations.Coordinate and implement the development and delivery of coding education to coders and to providers when documentation deficiencies or risks are identified.QualificationsAssociate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field strongly preferred. Additional experience as described below may be substituted for the minimum associate degree on a year-for-year basis.CCS required; CPC accepted with inpatient coding experience.Minimum of 5 years of progressive coding experience across facility and professional settings; a minimum of 2 years of coding leadership or supervisory experience.Strong familiarity with MS-DRG, APR-DRG, APCs, E/M coding, HCC capture, and OPPS rules.Epic coding experience preferred.Experience managing vendor coding partners is preferred.Company DescriptionEHMG is the East Hawaii Region of Hawaii Health Systems Corporations employed provider group.
