Position Description
Under the direction of the Campus Director, the Nurse Manager provides leadership and clinical oversight for medication management, administration, and overall nursing care across a large residential campus and chapter 766 therapeutic school, or across multiple scattered-site group homes in Walpole, MA.
Through the supervision and support of Registered Nurses, Health Service Coordinators and Wellness Coordinators, the Nurse Manager ensures the delivery of high-quality, consistent health care services that meet the complex needs of youth in care. Grounded in a thorough understanding of the agency’s mission, treatment philosophy, policies, and procedures, the Nurse Manager integrates these principles into daily practice and guides the nursing team in doing the same. The role includes strengthening clinical practices, enhancing quality of care, and promoting a healthy, safe and therapeutic environment for youth.
How You'll Be Making a Difference
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the population of youth in need of long-term, trauma-informed care
- Oversee the development of an individualized health services plan using a collaborative, wellness-focused approach. Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the plan.
- Assist with the development and implementation of healthcare policies and procedures for the campus which adhere to regulations from all collateral agencies such as DCF, DESE, DPH and EEC.
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary team in the management of ongoing care for youth in a long-term residential and educational setting, including medication administration, routine healthcare, and medical case management.
- Work directly with the prescriber to ensure that they have up to date information in order to provide quality medication management services for each youth.
- In collaboration with program leadership, hire nursing staff and engage in performance management and staff development and training.
- Oversee all aspects of the administration of medications, including the direct administration, training and supervision of Registered Nurses, Health Services Coordinators, Wellness Coordinators and certified staff. Assist with and oversee the preparation of leave of absence and/or transfer/discharge medications.
- Oversee the coordination of health education for youth and families and training for staff. Serve as a trainer in MAP, CPR, Narcan, EpiPen, Inhaler and First Aid.
- Provide oversight to the health screenings conducted at intake and conduct both routine health screenings and provide first aid or medical care as needed.
- Oversee the coordination of medical, diagnostic and laboratory appointments.
- Ensure ongoing evaluation of youth including vital signs as prescribed. Assist in making decisions regarding the course of treatment and monitoring the effectiveness, side effects, adverse reactions, and drug interactions of all medications.
- Provide brief crisis counseling as needed and assist in crisis prevention planning.
- Monitor laboratory reports and initiate appropriate action.
- Oversee the coordination of health care with ancillary staff, family members, guardians, psychiatrists, primary and specialty health care providers, and other professionals within the Home and with external organizations. Maintain on-going communications with primary health care provider.
- Work actively as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide quality care, attend team meetings and communicate regularly with team members. Assist with discharge planning.
- Provide oversight to the documentation process and complete reports and documentation needed for youth records, the Home and collateral and regulatory agencies.
- Assure that all medication and medical supplies are ordered, received, and checked for accuracy.
- Provide on-call, as part of an on-call rotation, for medication and or medical-related questions.
Qualifications
- Current RN license
- Pediatric and/or psychiatric nursing experience
- Experience with the assessment of youth during physical restraints preferred
- Ability to assess and monitor children for illness and injury
- Computer literate including use of Microsoft Office and use of an Electronic Health Record system with the ability to learn new software applications
