Position Description

The Milieu Director is a professional leadership role responsible for the strategic oversight, design, and evaluation of therapeutic milieu programming within a designated dormitory housing 8–11 youth. The Milieu Director applies advanced knowledge of trauma-informed care, behavioral intervention, and positive youth development to ensure a safe, structured, and growth-oriented environment. This role requires complex decision-making and specialized judgment to guide residential programming, staff performance, and crisis response, while aligning with the organization’s therapeutic and educational objectives.

The Milieu Director works collaboratively with the Director of Milieu Services, Clinical and Educational departments, and other program leaders to ensure residential operations integrate treatment plans, evidence-based interventions, and student-specific goals. The Milieu Director also serves as a key supervisor and mentor to residential leadership staff, fostering professional growth and adherence to program standards.

How You'll Be Making a Difference

  • Provide leadership, direction, and oversight for all aspects of dormitory milieu operations, ensuring that therapeutic interventions and daily routines align with each youth’s treatment plan and overall program goals.
  • Provide individual supervision for the Residential Supervisor and team supervision for all direct care staff in assigned dormitory.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate staff performance using evidence-based supervision practices; document supervision meetings and collaborate with the Director of Milieu Services regarding disciplinary actions, professional development, and performance improvement plans.
  • Participate in the hiring process for Residential Supervisors, Assistant Residential Supervisors, and Residential Counselors as needed, ensuring candidates demonstrate the capacity to apply trauma-informed, relational approaches.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and revision of program procedures, including the Residential Guide and other policy documents, ensuring compliance with state licensing and accreditation standards.
  • Support the Residential Supervisor in ensuring group and student living spaces are orderly, therapeutic, and promote a sense of belonging.
  • Coordinate and facilitate structured staff training and professional development, ensuring alignment with agency-wide learning initiatives and that all staff maintain current certifications and required competencies.
  • Provide direct therapeutic care to residents and lead crisis interventions as needed, applying advanced behavioral and clinical strategies; assume a leadership role in managing emergency situations by coaching direct care staff through the apprenticeship model.
  • In conjunction with the Residential Supervisor, plan and facilitate processing work for students following incidents or time out of group.
  • May be required to provide on-call coverage for the program on a rotating basis and act as shift leader as assigned.
  • Oversee dormitory budget, including expense tracking, program-related purchasing, and P-Card approvals consistent with fiscal policy.
  • Approve timesheet submissions for subordinates and complete payroll corrections as needed; perform these duties for the Residential Supervisor when they are off.
  • Review, edit, and complete notification processes on all incident reports for assigned dormitory; participate in investigations and corrective action planning when incidents are not handled in accordance with policy.
  • Oversee the implementation and fidelity of the behavior management system, monitoring effectiveness and collaborating with clinical staff to design individualized behavior intervention plans when appropriate.
  • Oversee and implement group interventions (e.g., dorm slow-downs) that reinforce community norms and emotional safety.
  • Ensure that therapeutic and recreational activities are planned, supervised, and implemented with consistency and alignment to treatment objectives; develop and evaluate these activities to promote engagement and skill building.
  • Participate in and/or chair various committee meetings (e.g., safety, treatment team, training, leadership) as assigned, contributing professional insight and recommendations.
  • Interface with outside stakeholders and various Wediko and Home departments to integrate services with educational, medical, and clinical disciplines. Collaborate across systems to ensure cohesive service delivery and resolution of interdepartmental issues.
  • Attend student team meetings and provide updates on residential functioning, behavioral progress, and participation in treatment.
  • Compile, review, and edit Monthly Reports to ensure accuracy, professional quality, and reflection of measurable goals and outcomes.
  • Complete dormitory supply and maintenance requests, ensuring timely communication with facilities and administrative teams.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding residential needs (e.g., clothing, restricted items, or family visit logistics) in coordination with treatment teams.
  • Check student belongings upon return from visits; determine items requiring secure storage or return home.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Education, or a closely related human services field is required; Master’s degree preferred.
