What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator 1 (Non-Union) position at Hewitt Young?

Role Mission:
The Estimator builds the possibility by turning opportunities into wins aligned with Hewitt Young’s focus and profit goals. Once a project has been selected, this role ensures Hewitt Young delivers precise, competitive estimates that secure profitable work and sets the field up for success.
Core Responsibilities:
- Review bid documents, drawings, and specifications to produce precise takeoffs and cost estimates.
- Analyze labor productivity and material pricing.
- Work with Project Managers, Procurement, and Executives during buyouts and final negotiations.
- Support Project Managers to assess job status, scope clarifications and change order support.
- Estimate construction costs for Public (plan and spec jobs), and Private negotiated work where documents are 50% to 75% complete.
- Develop proposals which qualify assumptions, allowances, cost-saving opportunities, and alternates.
- Track hit rates, analyze wins and losses, and identify ways to improve.
- Take ownership of the estimate process, client relationship, the proposal process, and job turnover.
- Maintain accurate estimating data, cost libraries, and bid logs.
- Attend pre bid meetings, pre bid walkthroughs, and site visits.
Must Have Competencies:
- Prior electrical estimating experience
- Strong knowledge of estimating software
- Proficient in proposal development
- Strong organizational skills
- Coachable and receptive to feedback
- Independent judgment with defined parameters
- Value engineering awareness and understanding
- Understanding of construction schedules and phasing
- Financial awareness and analytical skills to maintain profitability targets.
