Traffic Technician

Responsible for performing skilled technical work associated with traffic maintenance such as sign repair/installation, pavement marking installations, and guard rail repair and installations. The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered all all-inclusive listing of work requirements.  Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

  • Installs and maintains various traffic control devices including but not limited to signs, pavement marking, raised pavement markers, barricades and cones, and signal appurtenances as per Federal State and County standards. 
  • Designs, manufactures and assembles traffic control signs and other street signs utilizing plotters and cutter and manual techniques, and guard rail safety devices. 
  • Performs traffic data studies relating to traffic engineering, signalization and safe traffic control such as Timed Movement Counts, Accumulated daily totals, vehicle delay, and speed and curve slope speed studies.
  • Operates and maintains roadway stripping equipment, both paint and thermo plastic.
  • Review and inspects and plans as required to ensure compliance with Federal, State and County standards as they relate to sign and pavement marking work.  Develops short term and long-term maintenance plans for traffic sign and pavement marking maintenance. 
  • Regular attendance with the ability to work a five (5) day, forty (40) hour flex time work week.
  • May perform “on-call” duties at any time of the day or night as required for emergency response.

Emergency Response
County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Employees may request an exemption from this requirement by submitting the appropriate exemption form, subject to review and approval.Minimum Qualifications
  • High School graduate or equivalent Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in road or traffic maintenance.

A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County's discretion.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations
  • Must possess a valid Florida Class E driver’s license and be insurable by the current insurance carrier.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment:
    1. Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Certification and IMSA .
    2. Traffic and Marking Specialist Level II .
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment:
    1. NIMS/Incident Command Courses IS100, IS200 and IS700

Required Competencies
Knowledge of: 
  • Various traffic control devices included but not limited to signs, pavement marking, raised pavement markers, barricades and cones, and signal appurtenances and the installation and placement of such devices.
  • Design, manufacturing and assembling of traffic control signs and traffic control devices. 
Skilled in:
  • The use of power tools and equipment 
  • Various traffic control devices included but not limited to signs, pavement marking, raised pavement markers, barricades and cones, and signal appurtenances and the installation and placement of such devices.
  • Design, manufacturing and assembling of traffic control signs and traffic control devices. 
  • Conducting traffic data studies.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers, supervisors and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
Equipment Used
  • Hand tools, power augers, compressors, traffic data collections equipment, post drivers, and post pullers. 
  • Filter respirators, gloves, safety vests, hard hats, safety goggles, ear plugs, heavy boots, and radio and communication equipment.

Environmental Conditions
  • Works outdoors in various weather conditions with potential exposure to dust, dirt, noise, heavy rain and wind, and vibration. 
  • Exposure to moving objects and traffic and works in roadways.

Physical Demands 
  • Heavy and moderate lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses).
  • Walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, driving, equipment operation, eye, hand and foot coordination.

Pay Grade:  4
Salary Disclosure: Pay rates are based on policy, education, skill, experience level and internal equity.
