The Custodian I performs routine housekeeping and custodial tasks performed in the maintenance of County buildings.The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise to balance the workload

  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, roadway rules, and laws.
  • Dusts, polishes and moves furniture and washes walls, windows, woodwork, and blinds.
  • Cleans mirrors, windows and disinfects drinking fountains.
  • Empties wastebaskets and trash. 
  • Dilutes and mixes cleaning solutions.
  • Dusts and cleans offices and ensures official papers and items are not misplaced or destroyed.
  • Cleans floors, including mopping and sweeping. 
  • Cleans carpets, including vacuuming and spot removal. 
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, toilets and kitchens.
  • Check supplies daily, such as paper goods and soap, and replace as needed. 
  • Operates, maintains and makes routine repairs to cleaning equipment and reports damages to structures and equipment for required repairs.
  • Performs basic grounds keeping tasks as required. 
  • Must be able to work 4:30 pm – 1 am weeknights and into Saturday morning.
  • Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or other management personnel.
Emergency Response 
County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Employees may request an exemption from this requirement by submitting the appropriate exemption form, subject to review and approval.Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED). 
  • One year of janitorial experience.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida and be insurable by current insurance carrier, or valid Florida Identification Card is acceptable only for positions not required to drive a county vehicle.
  • Must have or be able to obtain certification within three (3) months of employment in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS)
    • IS-200.b: ICS for Single Resources & Initial Action Incidents
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
  • This position may be subject to the Hepatitis B Vaccine and other vaccines as necessary. 

A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County's discretion.

Required Competencies
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, procedures, techniques and equipment typically used in custodial work. 
  • Ability to operate all equipment associated with custodial work.   
  • Knowledge of safe, efficient and effective use of equipment, tools and cleaning supplies. 
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to work effectively alone as well as with other employees and the general public.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Frequent lifting and carrying more than 50 pounds. 
  • Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, climbing, and walking. 
  • Indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust, and odors. 
  • Contact with cleaning agents and chemicals.
  • Fingerprinting Required: Applicants selected for employment will be required to complete fingerprinting as part of the pre-employment screening process prior to their start date.
  • Physical Required: Candidates selected for this position will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination as a condition of employment. The physical examination is intended to confirm the candidate’s ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position.

Pay Grade: 1
Salary Disclosure: Pay rates are based on policy, education, skill, experience level and internal equity.
