GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The individual in this position is responsible for performing intermediate skilled work in the HVAC field to include repairs, modification, and installation for multiple types of heating, cooling, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment in the school buildings as required.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

• Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and installation of multiple types of heating, cooling, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment for the School Division.
• Serves as lead for other trades as assigned.
• Designs small projects, estimates material needs and purchases materials.
• Reviews building plans and specifications to determine the layout for HVAC and related materials.
• Identifies required tools and special equipment.
• Maintains all building codes, installation requirements and relevant legislation.
• Performs scheduled maintenance service on HVAC systems and equipment. 
• Ensures all requirements as specified by the manufacturer of systems are met.
• Ensures all installations, repairs and maintenance meet environmental protection requirements. 
• Assists other trades as necessary.

Additional Duties:

• Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Considerable skilled tradesperson experience. Experience with large scale HVAC equipment and building automation control systems preferred but not required.

Or an equivalent level of education and experience.

• Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License.
• HVAC trades license preferred, but not required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology of the mechanical or building trades to which assigned.
• Knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
• Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned trade.
• Knowledge of plumbing and electrical repairs preferred.
• Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
• Skill in the use of computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment.
• Ability to present information clearly and concisely in verbal and written form.
• Ability to draw and work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications.
• Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs.

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing. Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: 

• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Pushing or Pulling: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
• Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
• Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand 
• Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
• Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
• Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.

Work Environment:

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
