GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The individual in this position has leadership responsibility for organizing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the total curriculum and instructional program for secondary grades (Grade 6-12). Provides oversight and supervision for certain federal grants. This position is responsible for supervision of secondary curriculum coordinators.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
- Initiates leadership for curriculum planning, development, and implementation in grades 6-12.
- Keeps the curriculum and instruction programs up to date with particular emphasis on evaluating new developments in instruction.
- Administers, coordinates, and supervises the instructional program in all secondary schools, by cooperatively working with the principal and faculty of each building.
- Approves the selection of instructional materials and textbooks through proper channels as a cooperative committee procedure at all levels.
- Develops and initiates evaluation procedures for all programs.
- Develops and implements curriculum guides and resources for the district.
- Supervises and coordinates orientation and mentoring programs for new teachers.
- Creates and administers professional development for all middle and high school administrators, teachers, and support staff.
- Keeps abreast of all new instructional materials and strategies and evaluates their effectiveness as teaching aids in the educational program.
- Prepares and submits reports to the Superintendent and the School Board relating to the progress and accomplishments in curriculum and instruction development programs.
- Supervises and provides instructional and administrative support for middle and high school principals, teachers, and support staff.
- Supervises the secondary curriculum coordinators
- Oversees the Gifted Education Program
- Liaison for Patrick Henry Community College, NCI, and Governor’s School
- Conducts program audits and instructional reviews as needed.
- Coordinates the development of the division’s Program of Studies for middle and high schools.
- Serves as a member of the division VTSS team.
- Conducts, monitors, and advises on maintaining standards of accreditation and federal achievement targets.
- Oversees the development and implementation of certain federal grants
- Selects and supervises specific committee assignments.
- Conducts classroom observations as needed and provides feedback to principals and teachers.
- Assists with the recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of teachers and paraprofessionals.
- Works collaboratively with other directors to support the total instructional program.
- Communicates school improvement efforts to strengthen professional learning communities, evidence-based education, and increased student achievement.
Additional Duties:
- Performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING
- Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12 and/or Curriculum and Instruction.
- Five (5) years successful experience in administration preferred.
- Or an equivalent level of education and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of K-12 instruction and a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of effective instruction.
- Knowledge of the use of various technologies.
- Knowledge of the development, implementation, monitoring and coordination of curriculum.
- Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and present ideas effectively.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with school principals, teachers, students, support staff and the general public.
