JOB TITLE: Special Population Bus Aide
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Transportation
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs responsible human support work assisting with the transportation of pupils to and from school, providing help to the school bus driver; securing passengers in their seats; assisting students boarding and leaving the school bus. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the director of transportation and appropriate principals.
Essential Functions
High school diploma or GED.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
General knowledge of the transportation of students; some knowledge of transporting handicapped students; ability to assist students with patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students, and staff.

This is medium work requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and over 50 pounds rarely. Work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken work levels. Visual acuity is required for operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, extreme vibrations, hazards such as moving vehicles, moving mechanical parts, etc. and/or loud noises. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. The worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.

- Assists students on and off buses, including operating hydraulic-lift for wheelchair confined students.
- Ensures that all student passengers are properly secured in their assigned seats.
- Assists in controlling student behavior.
- Learns bus routes, schedules, and pickup points.
- Assists substitute drivers with directions.
- Keeps abreast of route and bus stop changes and student day care arrangements.
- Assists drivers in maintaining a clean bus interior.
- Maintains discipline in keeping with the school division regulations.
- Instructs riders regarding being responsible passengers.
- Reports personal absences in time for the supervisor to secure a substitute aide.
- Is alert and exercises good judgment concerning emergencies, disabled vehicles and irregular special requests by parents of riders
- Performs other duties as required.
