Description
Hennebery Eddy Architects seeks an experienced Controller to lead firmwide financial operations and partner with leadership on financial planning and strategy. The role oversees accounting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and financial reporting, ensuring strong controls and clear insights that support the firm's long‑ and short-term‑ goals. This position is located in our Portland, OR studio.
Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, A/R, A/P, payroll, project accounting, and revenue recognition.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure accurate project accounting, billings, and WIP reporting.
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and industry-specific financial practices.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting.
- Provide financial analysis to principals and project managers to support decision-making.
- Monitor firm performance against budget; identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
Process & System Oversight
- Manage and optimize financial workflows, internal controls, and accounting procedures.
- Oversee implementation, maintenance, and improvement of financial software; currently Deltek Ajera.
- Ensure systems support accurate project reporting and firmwide efficiency.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Manage regulatory compliance including tax filings, business licenses, and state/federal reporting.
- Coordinate annual financial review and tax preparation with external CPA firm.
- Coordinate annual firm billing rate setting process and prepare annual FAR overhead calculation.
- Ensure proper insurance policy renewals and coverages with support from leadership.
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff; ensure effective role delegation and training.
- Co-lead administrative team with HR manager
- Collaborate with marketing, IT, and project managers to support accurate budgeting and financial oversight.
- Serve as a key financial partner to principals, delivering actionable insights and recommendations.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- 7 years progressive accounting experience; 2 years in a leadership or Controller role.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Experience in professional services firms (architecture, engineering, or consulting).
- Proficiency with accounting and project management systems such as Deltek Ajera or similar.
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capability.
Preferred
- CPA designation.
- Knowledge of architectural project delivery and fee structures.
- Experience in a mid-size organization (50–150 employees).
- Familiarity with S-corp financial and regulatory operations.
- Familiarity with Oregon business and tax regulations.
