Title: Garage Mechanic
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Department: Highway
Supervisor: Head Mechanic
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Incumbent diagnoses problems, maintains and repairs County Highway equipment, machinery and trucks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Identifies equipment malfunctions.
- Identifies minor equipment malfunctions and repairs and replaces parts affected, such as carburetor, distributor, and generator.
- Makes service runs for emergency repairs of highway road equipment.
- Picks up parts for use in repairing equipment.
- Performs standard maintenance tasks on equipment.
- Communicates with County road crews over radio and telephone concerning machinery malfunctions.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assists in maintaining current supply inventory.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of standard procedures involved in performance of minor mechanical repairs on highway machinery and equipment
- Working knowledge of both diesel and gasoline engines
- Working knowledge of hydraulics, tire repair and welding procedures
- Working knowledge of sanders, mowers, snowplows, road graders, dirt loaders, grade-alls, woodchippers and loaders.
- Ability to reference and utilize information contained within repair manuals and parts books
- Ability to operate testing equipment, including compression gauges and timing lights
- Proficient use of all mechanic standard tools
- Ability to diagnose and properly address mechanical problems with highway equipment
- Working knowledge of safety precautions and their applications
- Ability to instruct others in performing minor mechanical repairs
- Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with others
- Ability to be on call when necessary and work overtime during inclement weather
- Ability to work with little or no supervision
- Requires a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s license, and be insurable to drive county vehicles without additional liability
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent must use decision-making skills to diagnose and act on complex problems. Work is done independently; however technical manuals and supervision are readily available for consultation. Work performed requires employee to be well versed in mechanics. Incumbent must have skills necessary to perform tasks safely. Errors could result in excessive risk and cost repercussions.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Working relationships are with supervisor, associates in same department, other county departments, vendors, and sales representatives.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Incumbent spends the majority of the time in the county garage. Occasional exposure to inclement weather when called on an emergency service call. Continual exposure to dirt, grease and noise. There is a danger of scratches, burns and cuts. Occasionally required to lift heavy objects. Incumbent works closely with moving parts.
