Staff Electrical Engineer

About HEN

HEN Technologies is a purpose-driven organization pioneering advanced tools for both wildland and structural firefighting. Leveraging fluid dynamics, thermal science, and cutting-edge mechatronics, we are developing a new generation of fire-suppression technologies. Our commitment to innovation has earned recognition and support from the National Science Foundation, and we are expanding our engineering team to advance our mission.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer with deep expertise in power electronics, hardware system integration, and mixed-signal design to join our small but rapidly scaling product development team. This role is perfect for a highly technical engineer who enjoys owning entire electrical subsystems—from power architecture definition through schematic capture, PCB layout, bring-up, EMC validation, and testing.

You will collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and manufacturing teams to define power architectures, rapidly prototype hardware, and deliver robust, field-ready electronics for demanding firefighting environments. This is a hands-on, high-impact position with the opportunity to shape core product platforms.

What You’ll Do
Architecture & System Definition
  • Define product-level electrical and power architectures, including power budgets, system interfaces, and safety requirements.
  • Translate high-level concepts into detailed specifications, schematics, and testable requirements.
  • Drive cross-functional technical alignment and design decisions.
Circuit Design & Hardware Development
  • Design mixed-signal, digital, and analog circuitry including power stages, sensor interfaces, and control electronics.
  • Own schematic capture and PCB layout (must-have) using industry-standard tools.
  • Select components, perform derating analyses, review designs, and ensure reliability under harsh conditions.
Power Electronics
  • Design, simulate, and test DC-DC converters, motor drivers, power distribution networks, high-current switching stages, and protection circuitry.
  • Define and validate power architectures for electromechanical systems.
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical engineering on thermal and packaging constraints.
Radio Frequency
  • Integrate commercial off-the-shelf wireless modules to support WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular wireless technologies
  • Select antenna options
Prototyping, Integration & Test
  • Bring up and debug new hardware; perform root cause analysis of electrical issues.
  • Perform EMC debugging and mitigation, ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
  • Integrate electronics with firmware, sensors, actuators, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Develop test plans, fixtures, and validation protocols.
  • Support product verification, field testing, and troubleshooting.
Documentation & Program Leadership
  • Maintain accurate designs, BOMs, and revision control.
  • Lead design reviews and mentor junior engineers or technicians.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing on DFM, DFT, and NPI activities.
What You’ll Bring
Must Have Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 8 years of relevant experience designing production-quality hardware.
  • Strong experience with:
  • Power electronics: DC-DC converters, motor drives, power protection & distribution.
  • Mixed-signal design with 32-bit microcontrollers.
  • Op-amp circuits, sensor conditioning, USB-C Power Delivery (PD).
  • Hardware bring-up, deep electrical debugging, and EMC debugging/mitigation.
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout using tools such as Altium Designer.
  • Strong hands-on lab skills and experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and JTAG/SWD debuggers.
  • Comfortable turning ambiguous requirements into robust, field-ready hardware.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional environments.
Nice-to-Have (Bonus Skills)
  • Advanced proficiency in Altium Designer.
  • SPICE simulation and power-stage modeling.
  • Experience designing for ruggedized or safety-critical environments.
  • Embedded C/C or Python for test automation or firmware interaction.
  • Expertise in thermal design, EMI/EMC compliance, or regulatory assessments.
  • RF/Wireless integration experience
