What are the responsibilities and job description for the Interior Designer position at Hemma Living?
Location: Hermantown, MN
Type: Full-time | Flexible schedule options available
We’re seeking a full-time Interior Designer to join our growing team. This role is ideal for someone with experience in residential interiors—particularly kitchens, baths, and whole-home spaces—who can confidently manage client relationships, contribute technical knowledge, and bring design concepts to life. This is a technical and creative role that involves layout development, sourcing, client communication, and documentation—plus the ability to move seamlessly between job sites and studio tasks.
This is not an entry-level or purely conceptual design position. You should be equally comfortable talking budget as you are talking backsplash. Strong visual sensibility, client communication, and technical know-how are essential. A willingness to be trained in new tools or systems is a must.
You’ll potentially be spending a meaningful portion of your time on job sites—checking in with contractors, gathering measurements, problem-solving, and building relationships. You should be able to read the room, anticipate potential tension, and bring a steady, professional presence that reflects well on Hemma. We’re looking for someone who builds trust, promotes our brand with integrity, and brings a sense of momentum to everything they do.
- Have experience in residential interior design—especially kitchen, bath, and whole-home projects
- Are confident working with floor plans, cabinetry layouts, and material selections
- Are able to balance aesthetics with technical detail, budget, and construction timelines
- Are comfortable attending job sites and coordinating with trades
- Can “read the room” to gauge client or contractor satisfaction and respond with calm professionalism
- Know how to stay productive in both fast-paced and quiet moments—especially by building contractor relationships, exploring new business opportunities, or organizing studio systems
- Take initiative, communicate clearly, and follow through
- Willing to learn new tools and technology
- Curious, coachable, and driven to grow
- Have experience with soft goods &/or merchandising
- Are actively working toward NKBA certification or have taken related coursework
- Have experience with residential construction drawings &/or NKBA drafting standards
- Bring relationships with contractors, builders, or vendors (without being salesy)
- Are a natural networker or enjoy sharing the brand through personal connections
- Have styled homes or supported photo shoots
- Bring an existing network that could help grow our pipeline
- Are open to supporting occasional seasonal decor projects (holiday installs, etc.)
- Comfortable (or willing to quickly self-teach) Chief Architect and/or 2020 Design
- Able to build accurate as-builts, floor plans, and cabinetry layouts
- Able to assist with estimating or proposal building
- Competitive pay structure based on project performance and production
- IRA with 3% match
- Medical benefit reimbursement
- Paid sick and vacation time
- Paid holidays
- Employee discount
- Flexible schedule where life and work can support each other
