Heluna Health and the Occupational Health Branch (OHB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are seeking a Surveillance Epidemiologist (SE) to join the Occupational Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (OLPPP).  

OLPPP is a multidisciplinary team that includes epidemiologists, research assistants, health educators, and industrial hygienists. The Program’s mission is to prevent occupational lead poisoning through surveillance, investigations, outreach, and education. The SE supports OLPPP’s mission by managing California’s Adult Blood Lead Level (BLL) Registry.

Salary ranges from $95,000 to $101,262.95 depending on experience and qualifications.

This position is funded through 6/30/2028. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Leads the operation and maintenance of the California Adult Blood Lead Registry; Makes decisions regarding program direction, specific procedures to be utilized, and surveillance activities to be implemented regarding the Registry. 
  • Collaborates with staff in the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch to address issues common to each program regarding lab compliance, reporting regulations, information technology, and other matters related to reporting, collecting, and utilizing blood lead level results. 
  • Prepares annual data reports to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health on data collection and statistics.
  • Conducts analysis of OLPPP data and disseminates data analyses to stakeholders in reports, web pages, and scientific abstracts and journal articles; and uses data findings as the basis for recommending projects and interventions to be undertaken and prioritized by OLPPP to fulfill the mandates of the program. 
  • Supports the OLPPP Chief in managing the fee waiver and Assembly Bill 35 (elevated blood lead referral) program.  
  • Serves as a subject matter expert by providing epidemiology/biostatistics advice and consultation for OHB and CDPH programs, state, local and federal agencies, and others, in the identification and prevention of occupational lead poisoning and other recognized and emerging occupational or environmental health issues.  
  • Participates in administrative activities in support of the OLPPP Chief, including bill analysis, legislation, and regulation development; coordinating responses to data inquiries and Public Records Act requests; and other work-related duties.
  • Reviews scientific literature to maintain and develop professional skills in the areas of surveillance, epidemiology, and statistical methods; attends scientific meetings and continuing education courses.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in the fundamentals and principles of epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health; fluent with current, state-of-the-art statistical methods. 
  • Experience designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, ideally in an occupational health setting.
  • Ability and experience analyzing and interpreting complex data.
  • Experience linking large datasets.
  • Ability to translate complex results into prevention recommendations interpretable by a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to both scientific and a lay audiences.
  • Knowledge of current developments in public health. 
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

Education/Experience 

  • Completed Ph.D., in Epidemiology or related field, required.
  • At least two years of post-doctoral experience in public health, required.
  • Experience in occupational epidemiology, required.
  • Evidence of prior publications, as a primary or co-author, required.
  • Knowledge and use of statistical software such as Statistical Analysis Software (SAS), R and/or Python, required.
  • Basic knowledge and use of data visualization software such as Microsoft BI and R-Shiny, required.
