The Opportunity

The Kennel Attendant plays a vital role in the daily care and well-being of the dogs in Helping Paws' training program. Working out of the Helping Paws campus, this position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kennel environment while providing attentive, compassionate care to dogs at various stages of their training journey. The Kennel Attendant works closely with training and veterinary staff, contributing to the health, comfort, and progress of each dog in our care. This is a hands-on, active role well-suited to someone who is reliable, detail-oriented, and genuinely passionate about animal welfare and the Helping Paws mission.

What You'll Do

Dog Care and Handling

  • Walk, play with, and/or monitor dogs individually or in appropriate groups, ensuring each dog receives appropriate exercise and attention.
  • Monitor dogs for changes in behavior, energy, appetite, or physical condition, and report concerns promptly to training or veterinary staff.
  • Handle dogs safely and calmly, following established handling protocols for each dog's training level and temperament.
  • Organize and/or dispense medication when directed by the Veterinary Care Coordinator.
  • Provide basic enrichment through kennel, recall and/or other games and positive interaction to support each dog's well-being.

Kennel Cleaning and Sanitation

  • Clean and sanitize dog kennels, runs, and outdoor relief areas, and other areas as assigned.
  • Remove waste and soiled bedding; restock with clean materials.
  • Mop, sweep, and disinfect floors, walls, and common areas.
  • Clean food and water bowls and ensure dogs have fresh water at all times.
  • Launder and manage kennel supplies such as bedding, towels, and leashes.
  • Dispose of waste in accordance with facility protocols.
  • Restock cleaning supplies and alert supervisors when inventory is low.

Facility Support

  • Conduct visual inspections of kennels and equipment, reporting any maintenance needs or safety concerns.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of storage areas, supply rooms, and common spaces.
  • Assist with receiving and stocking deliveries and volunteer supplies as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated comfort and confidence around dogs of varying sizes and energy levels.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established care and safety protocols.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent schedule.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to cleanliness and animal welfare.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff, volunteers, and others in a professional, friendly, and positive manner.

Preferred

  • Prior experience working with dogs in a kennel, shelter, veterinary, or training environment.
  • Basic dog training experience including loose leash walking and positive reinforcement training techniques preferred. Prior education or certification is ideal.
  • Basic knowledge of dog behavior and handling techniques.
  • Previous customer service experience is a plus.
  • Experience with cleaning or facilities maintenance in a professional setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stands, walks, bends, stoops, kneels, and crouches throughout the shift.
  • Regularly lifts, carries, and moves objects and dogs up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely manage, walk, and restrain dogs of varying sizes and strength levels.
  • Works in indoor and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to animal dander, odors, cleaning chemicals, and noise; appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) is provided.
  • Ability to move between multiple areas within the assigned building and, on occasion, between campus locations a short walking distance apart.
  • Maintains physical stamina sufficient to perform consistent active work throughout a 5-hour shift.
