HELP of Ojai is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the Ojai Valley since 1968. Our 2nd Helpings Thrift Store and Donation Center generate revenue that directly funds home-delivered meals, transportation, case management, and senior services for our community. We are seeking an organized, hands-on leader to manage our donation center.

Position Overview

  • Full-time, 35–40 hours per week
  • $22–$24/hour depending on experience, with medical and dental benefits and generous paid time off
  • Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday (both locations closed Mondays)
  • Location: HELP of Ojai Donation Center, with periodic coverage at the 2nd Helpings Thrift Store (~5 miles apart)
  • Regular travel between locations using a HELP of Ojai vehicle
  • Reports to: 2nd Helpings Operations Manager
  • Supervises: 1 part-time Donation Center Attendant and donation center volunteers
  • Available immediately

About the Role

The Donation Center Manager oversees all day-to-day operations of the donation center, including receiving, sorting, pricing, and transferring donated goods to the thrift store. This is an on-site leadership role responsible for managing workflow, maintaining quality standards, and supervising a part-time attendant and volunteers.

The donation center is open to the public Thursday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On closed days (Tuesday and Wednesday), the manager focuses on sorting, pricing, inventory preparation, administrative tasks, and volunteer coordination. The position also serves as a cross-trained backup at the thrift store, providing coverage for register operations, customer service, and opening/closing when the Operations Manager is unavailable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily donation center operations, including opening, closing, receiving, screening, and security
  • Make accept/decline decisions on incoming donations based on established guidelines
  • Oversee sorting, pricing, and quality assessment of all donated goods
  • Coordinate transfer of sale-ready inventory to the thrift store
  • Accept and document cash donations; issue donation receipts and maintain donor records
  • Manage disposal and recycling of unsellable items
  • Supervise the Donation Center Attendant: scheduling, training, task assignment, and accountability
  • Recruit, train, and schedule donation center volunteers and community service workers
  • Provide periodic coverage at the 2nd Helpings Thrift Store (POS, register, customer service, opening/closing)
  • Track and report on donation volume, quality trends, and processing metrics
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1–2 years of supervisory or lead experience, with demonstrated ability to direct, train, and hold others accountable
  • Experience in retail, warehouse, logistics, or nonprofit operations
  • Comfortable with cash handling, basic record-keeping, and learning POS systems
  • Comfortable with basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, internet, and email
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to make independent decisions about donation quality, pricing, and workflow
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and work on your feet up to 8 hours a day
  • Valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record

Preferred

  • Experience with thrift store, resale, or donation processing operations
  • Experience managing volunteers or community service workers
  • Knowledge of the Ojai Valley community
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Working Conditions

This position is based at the donation center, a warehouse-style outdoor environment. The work involves significant physical activity, including lifting, sorting, standing, bending, and moving throughout the day, and handling a wide variety of donated items. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
