Senior Reliability Engineer – Rolling Mill

Location: Cayce, South Carolina

Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 6:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Work split: Approximately 50% plant floor / 50% office and analysis

Position Overview

A major steel manufacturer near Columbia, South Carolina is seeking a Senior Reliability Engineer to improve the performance and availability of rolling-mill equipment.

This is a hands-on position for someone who has previously diagnosed failures involving industrial gearboxes, gearing, bearings, motors, alignment and other rotating equipment. The engineer will work closely with reliability technicians, maintenance personnel and operations to identify recurring failures, lead root-cause investigations, and implement solutions that reduce unplanned downtime.

The successful candidate will be expected to learn the facility quickly and operate independently within approximately 90 days.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the reliability and performance of rolling-mill equipment
  • Diagnose recurring failures involving gearboxes, transmissions, bearings, shafts, motors and other rotating equipment
  • Lead root-cause analyses following equipment failures and production delays
  • Develop corrective actions that address underlying causes rather than symptoms
  • Analyze downtime, work-order and equipment-history data
  • Identify “bad actor” equipment and recurring failure patterns
  • Build and maintain reliability reports and performance metrics
  • Use SAP/CMMS data to evaluate equipment performance and maintenance history
  • Partner with reliability technicians on vibration monitoring, thermal inspections and other predictive-maintenance activities
  • Interpret vibration trends, thermal scans and condition-monitoring results
  • Support precision alignment, balancing, lubrication and mechanical improvement initiatives
  • Spend significant time in the field validating data and inspecting equipment
  • Support equipment upgrades, installations and reliability projects
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to maintenance and operations leadership

Required Qualifications

  • Five or more years of industrial reliability, maintenance engineering or rotating-equipment experience
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing industrial gearbox, gearing, bearing or alignment failures
  • Strong understanding of rotating equipment and mechanical power transmission
  • Experience conducting structured root-cause analysis
  • Ability to interpret equipment history, downtime data and predictive-maintenance results
  • Experience working with a CMMS such as SAP, Maximo or a comparable system
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced industrial environment

Preferred Background

  • Steel, paper, metals, mining, cement, chemical processing or another heavy process industry
  • Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology degree
  • Vibration Analysis Level I, II or III
  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional certification
  • Experience with thermal imaging, motor/fan balancing or precision alignment
  • Previous rolling-mill or steelmaking experience

A degree is preferred but may not be required for candidates with extensive industrial maintenance and reliability experience.

Schedule and On-Call Expectations

This is primarily a first-shift, Monday–Friday position. On-call demands are limited, although support may occasionally be required during a major equipment failure, outage or root-cause investigation.
