What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at Heidelberg University?
The Custodian will be responsible for planning and coordinating daily work assignments and will work collaboratively with other maintenance and facilities staff. Performs general custodial/janitorial/cleaning work in all campus owned buildings and facilities; uses equipment and supplies as instructed and respectfully and maintains equipment in proper condition.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience, including:
- Thorough knowledge of general custodial / janitorial work.
- Experience operating a variety of janitorial equipment including, but not limited to, vacuum, floor scrubbers, shampooers, and buffers.
- Ability to work both independently as well as cooperatively in a team setting.
- Exceptional self-motivation and ability to work quickly and efficiently.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with staff and all offices across campus.

Education and Professional Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid US Driver’s License
Preferred Education and Experience:
- One (1) to two (2) years successful full-time experience in custodial work
- Experience in multi-facility environments
- Prior safety training and / or certification (i.e., First Aid, CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens, MSDS, etc.)

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use arms, hands and fingers to operate and manipulate equipment generally found in an office setting. The employee may be frequently required to be mobile, communicate, and hear. The employee may occasionally be subject to a variety of outdoor environmental conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation. The employee must be able to walk, stoop, climb, push, pull, bend, and perform duties in awkward positions while handling equipment and/or materials. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to sixty-five (65) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Mental demands include varied degrees of occasional stress while performing job duties.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works varied environmental conditions and locations including extreme temperatures and/or weather conditions. Exposure to dangerous machinery, fumes and contact with insulation, dust particles and asbestos, and danger of electrical shock may occur. Exposure to cleaning materials and chemicals exists. The noise level in the work environment will range from moderately quiet to frequently loud.
