Purpose:
- The Construction Manager will manage the operational planning and execution of the construction project(s).
- This role, through strategic management, will ensure safe and efficient operations, equipment usage, and staffing of the company’s projects, which involve:
- Complex Rehabilitation of Concrete and Earthen Structures
- Earthen Embankment Dams
- Dam Remediation and Rehabilitation
- Roller-Compacted Concrete Dams and Structures
- Heavy Highway and Road Construction
- Major Excavation and Embankment
- Processing and Management of On-site/Off-site Materials
- Drilling and Blasting
- Crane Support Project Services
- The candidate will be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. The candidate will rely on their personal extensive experience and sound judgment to lead the project team.
Responsibilities:
- Establish, maintain and lead a positive safety culture on each and every project.
- Ensuring that effective and consistent operating practices exist at all levels on all projects.
- Tracking, reviewing and constantly improving efficiency and productivity goals on all projects.
- Advising and assisting in the hiring, training and development for all project leadership positions, such as Superintendent, Craft Foremen, Project Manager/Engineer, etc.
- Maintaining frequent contact with project leaders, perform frequent operational reviews and site visits.
- Coordinate with Corporate operations for on-going and upcoming projects.
- Ensuring all project controls are being implemented and used effectively.
- Ensure project leadership is utilizing labor and equipment resources properly by monitoring project productivity and logistics.
- Recommends and/or makes decisions regarding new programs/initiatives that will positively impact projects.
- Managing a larger team or multiple small teams through direction of subordinate management and/or supervisory staff.
- Monitor subcontract negotiations, administration and performance on construction projects.
- Develop and lead a professional field force comprised of Superintendents, Surveyors, Quality Control personnel, Foremen, Project Managers, and Project Engineers.
- Other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- The Construction Manager should have 15 years of construction experience in managing projects and/or construction managers on large complex high-risk projects in the relevant industry.
- Experience in dam and water resource heavy/civil construction is required.
- Experience on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects is required.
- It is ideal if the candidate has at least 4-year qualified degree in a construction or management related field, however the candidate will be assessed considering both their educational background and relevant experience. An advanced degree may offset lesser experience.
- The candidate should have excellent interpersonal, communication and team facilitation skills. They should also have proven team leadership experience and have demonstrated project management experience. The candidate should also have experience in designing business processes and workflows.
Physical Requirements:
- The individual must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
- Sitting for long periods of time, sometimes up to 4-6 hours.
- Exposure to computer screens and cellular telephone screens.
- Walking, stepping, climbing or otherwise moving from one location to another on the job site.
- Visually seeing equipment operations well (either naturally or with corrective lenses).
- Standing, stooping kneeling, squatting, climbing or sitting for long periods of time
- Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
- Lifting 25 lb. objects occasionally. Carrying 25 lb. objects occasionally.
- Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure to sometimes adverse weather conditions.
- Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident.
- Exposure to working outdoors in all-weather conditions.
- Ability to work more than 40 hours in any given week including weekend assignments and holidays as required.
Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills.
- Ability with information gathering necessary to develop a thorough understanding of the project while providing strong leadership skills to lead a diverse cross-functional team is essential.
- Strong personal initiative, a sound planning and problem solving capacity and effective interpersonal skills.
- Awareness of industry recommended practice, design methods and QA/QC requirements with respect to checking procedures, incorporation of agreed changes and document control.
- Strong personal computer skillset to include Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, and industry associated bidding programs.
- Ability to meet fast paced, changing schedules and their associated deadlines.
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university with a concentration in Civil Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management or a related field of study is preferred but not required.
- Candidates with significant construction management experience will be considered in lieu of education.
Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license.
- Advanced OSHA certification preferred (OSHA 30, OSHA 500).
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification a plus.
Travel: Travel is required, up to 100%
